few men there eligible for membership who are not affiliated with the local lodge. In filling our offices we endeavor to select the best men. Our officers are capable, being selected because of their ability and enthusiasm. Our financial secretary, Bro. W. W. Scott, is a hustler. He is responsible, to a very great extent, for our large membership. Whenever he gets on the trail of a nonunion man it means an application. However, it is one thing to get members and another thing to keep them. We have had splendid success in holding our members. This may be attributed to the fact that we make membership worth while. We have always felt that affliation with the Brotherhood should mean more than the holding of an insurance policy. We make it a rule to protect our members against injustice and discrimination. When they get into trouble we fight to get them out of it. We preach and practice loyalty to one another. Disloyalty should never be permitted to exist amongst members of our Order anywhere. True Brotherhood men should crush it out wherever they find it. Dissension and disloyalty spell disruption and failure; unity of action and interest in one another insure success. Again, we must endeavor to make our lodge rooms more than mere places of amusement. A certain amount of enjoyment is, of course, necessary so that interest will not lag, but there is a far greater responsibility before our Brotherhood, viz., the education of its members. Railroad'officials expect more from Brotherhood men and Brotherhood men should be in a position to demonstrate that they are better men because of their affiliation with the Brotherhood. Instead of wasting the time at meetings in unprofitable debate, let the lodge request qualified members to prepare papers on subjects of special interest to enginemen. No member is so wise that he cannot learn something from brother members. Discussion of papers by the lodge members is bound to bring out valuable points and at the same time afford interesting matter for debate. It is along these lines we are working, and we are getting results. Moreover, we are a charitable organization. Whenever assistance is required by a brother in distress we go to his aid and we are not afraid to spend a few dollars for this purpose. We have a sick benefit society in connection with the lodge and its establishment has been more than justified by the good work it has done. Our sick

are provided with flowers and such delicacies as they are allowed to partake of, and we see that they are given good attention. It is thus we male membership worth while and we get results.

We believe that a strong ladies auxiliary is of estimable value to a lodge. For some time our ladies lodge was not active and we felt the result of the inactivity, but today the ladies are well organized and they are doing excellent work in co-operating with the men. We hold occasional union meetings with the ladies and at these gatherings questions of concern to both lodges are threshed out with surprising results. New life has been infused into our lodge and the ladies have shown their true worth in promoting the best interests of the Brotherhood. We have found that we need the assistance of the ladies auxiliary and attribute much of our success and prosperity to their co-operation.

LODGE 298-(Member, Kansas City, Kans.). Business on the Santa Fe is very dull at present. We have men back firing who have been running for three years. Our engines are in pretty fair shape, but won't be if we keep pulling such heavy tonnage. Last year we pulled 2,100 tons west and it has increased until now we are pulling 2,600 tons. I am glad to say, however, that our division is very well lined up in the Brotherhood.

LODGE 589-(John C. Arnold, Empalme, Sonora, Mexico). I am still here and intend to stay if they do not chase us out, and if they do I will follow the soldiers right in again. Nobody bothers us here. They took the trains all off between San Blas, second division south of this point, and Tepic. They brought all the engines and cars to Empalme. Trains Nos. 1 and 2 on the north end are on daylight schedule; so are 1 and 2 south. No freight south.

The picture published herewith shows a wreck caused by the Yaqui Indians, who broke out and shot up the south passenger train one day during the month of April last, and then wrecked No. 2 the next day, killing George Rhew, also Bill Bartell, half French half Mexican, and one of the best friends I ever had. He and myself had just gotten back from a prospecting trip. The mail clerk was

also killed. I helped lift the bodies out of the baggage car. The accident happened about thirty miles from here. Following this there was a fight and about eight soldiers and eight or ten Indians were killed. They are now running a

WRECK ON MEXICAN RAILROAD NEAR EMPALME, SONORA, MEXICO pilot train ahead of No. 2. It comes back ahead of No. 1 with a steel gondola and two second-class coaches filled with sacks of sand for breast works. They carry about fifty or sixty soldiers.

LODGE 482-(W. V. Gilchrist, Whitefish, Mont.) For some time Stillwater Lodge has been holding occasional joint

meetings with Glacier Lodge No. 150 of the Ladies Society. We have finally settled on a regular joint meeting the first Saturday of each month, and are finding these meetings both pleasant and profitable. Each lodge meets in its own hall at 2.00 p. m. After our regular business meeting we repair to the ladies' hall and unite with them in a brief joint business session, devoted to a general discussion of topics of mutual interest, appointment of committees, etc. Then we are given over to the tender mercies of the entertainment committee, who arrange for music, games and a general good time, after which the ladies serve refreshments that are always both delicious and substantial. After supper games are resumed by those who can remain and we frequently continue them all the evening. At first many of the brothers were rather reluctant about going to the ladies' hall, but once they attended they were easily won over, until now no one misses the joint meeting if he can help it, and this has had a tendency to increase the attendance at the meetings of our own lodge. The co-operation is benefiting both lodges and every member of 482 is ready to take oath that the sisters of Glacier Lodge are not only the finest cooks but the jolliest organization of ladies in the State of Montana.
