That there is a God, may, I think, fafely be concluded to be from revelation merely. And how Small a part of religious knowledge is this. And how far beyond this do the views, opened to us by revelation, extend? Such as the important doctrines, Of our being originally under the patronage of a fuperior being, between us and the Supreme; Of our fuffering by the powerful malice of a wicked fpirit, the enemy of our divine patron; Of cur being rescued, and redeemed to God, as far as was poffible, from the tyranny of this grand adverfary, by our glorious Deliverer; Of the restoration of the paradifiacal state, instead of the present ruined condition of our world, and of the continuance of that renewed state, during a certain period; Of our whole fpecies's being to be delivered from death, by Chrift, to be judged by him, and to receive a retribution according to his law; Of the heavenly state, in which thofe, who by Chrift the general judge, fhall be thought worthy of it, shall be raised to degrees of perfection and happiness greatly fuperior to what they could, but for his interpofition, have attained in confequence of their attainments in virtue;

ence, have been traced out by fpeculative men. But the knowledge of the excellence of virtue, and deformity of vice, could ferve them to very little purpose, befides confounding and distracting them the more, when they obferved, how promifcuous and inadequate the retribution is in this state, which, for any thing they could could have imagined, was the whole of man's exiftence.

Of

Of the final conqueft, and deftruction of the grand adverfary, and of the obdurate part of our fpecies, who have taken part with him; and, of our Saviour's refignation of all concern with the remaining part of our fpecies, when established in that fafe and certain state of happiness, to which he is to raise them.
