EXCESSIVELY RARE. THE FINEST COPY KNOWN, FORMERLY EDWIN TRUMAN'S. Vol. 1 is not lettered so on title, but has date 1819. One of the most important Cruikshank books. All the plates are in the earliest state.

For about forty years Captain Douglas devoted himself to a search for THE FINEST AND MOST COMPLETE COPIES procurable of George Cruikshank's productions, and it is well known by everybody interested in the artist that he succeeded in this ambition beyond any other Cruikshank collector. He was persistent in obtaining the finest copies procurable, and always eliminated an inferior specimen when he had a chance of replacing it by a superior copy. "THE DOUGLAS COLLECTION" has a worldwide reputation.

THIS IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE FINEST COPY IN EXISTENCE; and has been successively in the possession of the three greatest collectors of the works of George Cruikshank: H. W. Bruton, Edwin Truman and R. J. H. Douglas. From it Captain Douglas made the facsimile which he used as a frontispiece to his Bibliography of Cruikshank.
