Thus, though 'neath alien yoke the Saxons toil,
They rise afresh, the rulers of the soil;

And when the victors, e'er embroiled in strife,
Perish by civil feud, a fresher life

Takes Saxon England from the fateful day

When England first 'neath power of Norman lay.

HEY brought him to the low sea-beach,

Whereon the waves in silver break,

And cheerfully he answered each Farewell and wish for his dear sake.

And out into the sunset's blaze,

Far as their anxious eyes could range, They watched the path of golden rays Behind his bark to shadow change.

So lingering, until evening's shade
Lay deeper on the lonely shore,
They saw his sail at distance fade,
And felt he would return no more.

THE VOYAGE OF LIFE.

They knew how hard it is to steer
Across Life's waters all alone,

When home and first love's grown so dear,
And all the friends of youth are gone.

When Love's polestar has ceased to guide,
And Duty fades into a dream,

And siren voices o'er the tide

Are borne from where false beacons gleam.

Then all together on the shore

They knelt, and prayed for him anew,
And when they rose and looked once more,
His topmost sail had sunk from view.
