HARRIS ON INSECTS CHEAP EDITION.

A TREATISE ON SOME OF THE INSECTS INJURIOUS TO VEGETATION. BY THADDEUS WILLIAM HARRIS. A new Edition, enlarged and improved, with Additions from the Author's Manuscripts, and Original Notes, and illustrated by Engravings drawn from Nature, under the supervision of PROF. LOUIS AGASSIZ. Edited by CHARLES L. FLINT, Secretary of the Massachusetts State Board of Agriculture. 8vo. pp. 651. Price, $ 3.50.

Same work, plates uncolored, $ 2.50.

In order to place this valuable work within the reach of all, a cheap edition, containing all the text and plates of the most expensive edition, has been issued, which will be bound with plates either plain or colored. Every person interested in any way in the cultivation of the soil should own a copy of this work.

To show the value of the work, the manner in which it has been executed, and the importance of the subject, it is sufficient to say, that the Legislature of Massachusetts expended ten thousand dollars in its preparation.

The work surpasses in beauty and elegance anything of the kind ever before attempted in this country.

The illustrations are very numerous and very superb, including nearly three hundred woodcuts in the highest style of the art, and nearly a hundred objects on steel colored from life by

hand.

It is issued in an octavo volume, beautifully printed at the University Press, Cambridge, on tinted paper, handsomely bound, and is one of the most important and valuable works of the kind ever issued from the press. Every farmer, every horticulturist, and every student of Natural History should have a copy.

The New York Tribune says:-"Dr. Harris on Insects has become a standard work.

We doubt whether there exists in any language a single volume upon insects injurious to vegetation in all respects equal to this. . . . . . We heartily commend this work to agricultural societies, as one of the best to be offered as a premium, combining, as it eminently does, utility with beauty."

CHEAP EDITION OF MR. KING'S WHITE HILLS.

THE WHITE HILLS, THEIR LEGENDS, LANDSCAPE, AND POETRY. By REV. THOMAS STARR KING. With Sixty Illustrations, engraved by Andrew, from Drawings by Wheelock. Crown 8vo. Price, $ 2.00.

The attention of all lovers of mountain scenery is requested to this work, as one in every respect the most beautiful of its kind ever issued. Mr. King's name is so intimately connected with the White Mountains by his inimitable descriptions of their scenery, that everything from his pen in relation to them is eagerly sought.

The work is elegantly printed on calendered paper, in the most exquisite style. Author and artist have united to furnish a book which is all that could be desired.

All intending to visit the mountains should provide themselves with this work, which will enable them to enjoy their visit in prospect, and which, after their return, will aid them in bringing vividly to mind the unequalled grandeur and beauty of the scenery.

The great popularity of "The White Hills," and its acknowledged pre-eminence as a reliable guide-book to the tourist, have induced the publishers to issue this cheap edition, portable and convenient in size, and at the same time containing all the text and illustrations of the quarto edition. In this form, it is the most valuable and entertaining travelling companion that can be desired for a visit into the "hill country."

A few copies of the elegant quarto edition also for sale.

IMPORTANT BOOK IN PRESS,

BY

WALKER, WISE, & Co.,
Co., BOSTON.

The Results of Emancipation.

BY M. AUGUSTIN COCHIN.

Translated by MISS MARY L. BOотн, translator of M. GASPARIN'S WORKS ON AMERICA.

So little is positively known of the economical and social results of Emancipation in those countries where it has taken place, that the importance of this volume to the people of the United States, in the present crisis, can hardly be overestimated.

It is based entirely on official reports; and its statements, which comprehend every form of the question, are fully reliable.

Of the style and attractiveness of the book, the following extract from a notice of the French edition, in the Christian Examiner, may testify. It is pronounced, "among the most remarkable, fascinating, and timely books of the year. It is at once cautious and eloquent, candid and enthusiastic; as sagacious as De Tocqueville's work on America, and as ardent as Victor Hugo's Legend of the Ages. It is scientific in its arrangement, accurate in its display of facts, logical in its reasoning, and clear in its conclusions."

The Home Journal says: “This book formed the groundwork of the article in 'Brownson's Review,' which opened the controversy between the editor and ARCHBISHOP HUGHES. An unusual honor has been accorded it in France, by the decree of a prize of three thousand francs from the French Academy. It is written in a clear and attractive style, weaving an immense amount of statistics together in a most readable form, and treats of the practical results of emancipation wherever effected, — socially, morally, economically, and politically. With a patience and skill belonging only to a Frenchman, the writer has plunged deep into official documents, and brought forth readable results which enable one to see at a glance what emancipation has really done in the colonies of France, England, Denmark, and Sweden. It is by far the most elaborate work ever written on the subject, and cannot fail to be welcomed in the present crisis."
