NOTES.-Solutions for hypodermic use should be neutral in reaction, neither acid nor alkaline; and freshly prepared, especially solutions of the alkaloids, which develop a penicillium, which grows at the expense of the alkaloid. Aqua Fontana, if filtered, is a better menstruum than Aqua Destillata which has been kept for a weck, and frequently exposed to the atmosphere. To run the least risk of producing a sore at the point of injection, use very fine needles, and deliver the injection into the areolar tissue beneath the skin, instead of into the skin, as lay parties generally do for themselves. I have given injections of Morphine and Atropine to a dying girl 3 and 4 times daily for two months, and never produced a sore. Always force out all fluid, and wipe the needle-point dry between the fingers, before returning it to the case ; the sebaceous matter on the fingers keeping it free from rust. There is an area of several inches square, on the upper and exterior aspect of the thigh, just below the great trochanter of the femur, which is remarkably insensible, being sparingly supplied with cutaneous nerves. (See Fig. 307, Gray's Anatomy, 10th English edition.) An injection delivered in this area will not be felt by the patient. Avoid puncturing a vein; if you do so, watch the patient

and prepare an injection containing gr. o of Atropine Sulphate, to administer if dangerous symptoms arise. Never, except under special circumstances, administer the salts of Morphine or Atropine hypodermically to children less than 15 years of age.
