There are certain great questions which all men wish to know. Is there a God? Has God spoken to man? What has he said? Has man a future? What is the relation of that future to the present life?. How shall man escape from sin and its consequences? Had the universe a beginning? Will it have an end? Is the universe limited in space and time, or is it unlimited? Had the universe an intelligent first cause? Is the matter of the universe created, or is it eternal? Is God immanent in the universe, or has he wound it up like a great clock, and is he now simply looking on while it runs down? What is the origin of force? What is the present producing cause of the forces of the universe? Is creation still going on? Is the material universe being extended into space? What is the great end of the universe? What is the great end of man? What is the connection between mind and matter? Is mind immortal? These and unnumbered other questions force themselves upon mankind for an answer.
The most fundamental and momentous among all these questions is this, is there a personal, self-existent First Cause of the universe? This is not only the foundation of all religion, it is the foundation of all science. If this is doubted, there is doubt and mystery everywhere. If this is doubted, there is no rest for any mind. Next to this in importance, is the question, has God spoken to man? If he has thus spoken, that revelation is the most important thing man can
