Ir a volume of knowledge may be acquired from the mere contemplation of the sea, as the great surpassing wonder of creation, it will not be thought remarkable, that materials should be furnished by the efforts of christian benevolence among the sons of ocean, sufficient to form another small octavo. These materials are most abundant, and are daily increasing. The "march of mercy" on the sea is marked by the grandest achievements. Great moral results have been secured;-and the most powerful secret influence is at present at work on the deep. To record all that has been done and is now going forward would fill several volumes. Hundreds of our ships have of late acquired a new character;-thousands of our seamen have become new creatures. To the record of these changes, the following pages are devoted; and, we think, the details cannot fail to interest every good and honest heart. That the Bethel cause has made great progress during the year, cannot be denied. Four-and-twenty years ago there was not a Bethel flag in existence; and then, a pious sailor was a wonder. Now there is scarcely a shore on which the flag, with its branch of peace and star of hope, is not seen waving in the breeze. There are, at the lowest calculation, two hundred Bethel captains, several hundreds of Bethel ships, and from |
