26" Many more things I have to say and to judge concerning you: but, as I said before, God the Father, who hath SENT me, is the TRUE *Teacher and Judge: and I speak unto the world those things only which I have heard and learned from HIM."

27 The Jews understood not that he thus spake to them of God the FATHER.

28 Wherefore Jesus said to them," "When hereafter ye shall have lifted up on the cross the chosen Son of man, as *Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, THEN ye shall understand that I am HE, that is, the promised Messiah, and that of MYSELF or own authority I now do nothing, but only as the heavenly Father hath taught me, do I speak these things."

29 "Moreover the Father who hath sent me is spiritually WITH me: the Father hath not left me ALONE, because I always do those things which are most pleasing to HIM."

30 On his speaking these words many of his hearers believed on him.

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews who had thus faithfully believed on him,

" If YE Jews continue stedfast in this my word and doctrine, then are ye TRULY my disciples."

32" And ye shall undershall understand and know assuredly the truth of my doctrine, and the

knowledge of that truth shall make you spiritually FREE."

33 The Jews answered him, "We are the true seed or family of ABRAHAM, and to no one were we ever at any time under the law of bondage, as the Gentiles are: how sayest thou therefore, that 'Ye shall become FREE men?" "

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily I say to you, that every one who doeth the work or service of SIN is become the bond-servant or slave to SIN."

35 "Now the bond - SERVANT abideth not as a lawful son in the Father's household for EVER: (but he changeth his service or bondage :) the SON, on the contrary, abideth with his Father as a free-man for EVER."

36 "If therefore the Son, who is himself free, make YOU Jews free from your present sinful bondage, ye shall indeed be FREE men."

37 "I well know that ye are naturally or by birth the seed and offspring of Abraham: nevertheless ye now seek to kill ME, because THIS my holy word and doctrine findeth no place in you.'

38 "I speak THAT which I have assuredly SEEN, and known with God my heavenly Father; and YE also in like manner do THAT which ye have so seen with YOUR wicked father (the devil.)"

41 "YE Jews now do the works of your present evil FATHER. The Jews therefore said to him, "WE have not been born, as the idolatrous Gentiles, children of sinful FORNICATION : 'we have, as *Isaiah saith, all one and the same Father, namely, GOD.'”

42 Whereupon Jesus said to them, "If GOD were truly your FATHER, ye would have loved ME: for I spiritually came forth from GOD, and am now come hither: neither moreover am I come hither on my own authority, but HE, namely, GOD, hath sent me forth."

43" Wherefore do ye not understand this my mode of speech? It is because ye will not hearken to this my spiritual doctrine."

44"YE are born of the nature of your evil father the DEVIL, and the evil lusts of your evil father ye desire to do: HE, the Devil, was a murderer of men from the beginning *of his coming, and stood not firm in the truth of God:

because there is no TRUTH in him when he speaketh falsehood, he speaketh from his own evil inventions: for he is a liar, and the father of the liar."

45 "But ME, because I now tell you the TRUTH, ye do not believe."

46"WHO among you convicteth me of SIN or falsehood? And if I tell you the TRUTH, why do not ye Jews BELIEVE me?"

47 He who is spiritually born of GOD hearkeneth to the WORDS of God: for this reason ye Jews hearken not to them, because ye are not spiritually born of God."

48 Then answered the Jews, and said to him, "Do not we rightly say, that THOU art as a Samaritan, and hast an evil spirit in thee, and speakest falsehood?"

49 Jesus answered, “I have NOT an evil spirit, but on the contrary I HONOUR my heavenly FATHER: and YE do DIS

the holy Prophets are dead: yet THOU sayest, If any one keep faithfully My saying and doctrine, he shall NEVER taste of death.""

53"Art THOU greater than our forefather Abraham, who is DEAD? and than the Prophets who are dead also? whom dost thou make THYSELF to be?"

54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify MYSELF, my glory is as nothing but it is my heavenly FATHER who glorifieth me, of whom ye Jews say, that he is YOUR God:"

:

55 "Yet ye have NOT truly known him; but I know him truly and if I should say that I do NOT so know him, I shall be like unto YOU, namely, a liar or deceiver: but I KNOW him truly, and HIS saying or law I keep faithfully."

56" Your forefather Abraham was inwardly rejoiced to behold by the eye of faith this my *promised day, and he beheld it spiritually, and was glad thereat."

57 Then said the Jews to him, "Thou art not yet fifty years of age, and hast thou heretofore SEEN ABRAHAM?"

58 Jesus said to them, "Verily, verily, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I was spiritually the promised Christ."

59 Whereupon they took up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out from the temple, having gone through the midst of them all, and so he passed along.

CHAPTER IX.

1 Now as Jesus was passing along, in Jerusalem, he saw a man who had been blind from his birth.

2 And his disciples asked him concerning the blind man, saying, "Rabbi, that is, Teacher, WHICH of the persons hath sinned, THIS man or his PARENTS, that he was thus born blind?"

3 Jesus answered, "Neither because THIS man hath sinned, or his parents, was he thus born blind: but he was born blind in order that the gracious works of GOD should now be manifested in him."

4 "I myself must now work the works of GOD my heavenly Father who hath sent me, whilst it is DAY: for the night soon cometh when no one can longer work."

5 "As long as I am in the world, I am the spiritual light of the world."

6 Having thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and spread as an ointment the clay upon the eyes of the blind man :

7 And he said to him, "Go now hence, wash thyself in the pool or bath of Siloam:"* (which Hebrew word signifieth by interpretation 'Sent of God.') So he went away, and washed himself, and came back seeing.

8 ¶ Whereupon his neighbours, and they who had noticed * Syr. Shiloha.

him heretofore, that he was blind, said, "Is not this man he who used to be sitting in the street, and begging?"

9 Some of them said, that "This man is he: but others said, that he is LIKE him.' The man himself said, that "I AM he."

10 They said therefore to him, "How were thine eyes thus opened?"

11 The man answered and said, "A man who is called JESUS made clay, and anointed mine eyes therewith, and said to me, Go thou hence unto the pool or bath of Siloam, and wash thyself there.' So having gone there and washed myself, I received sight."

12 Then said they unto him, "WHERE is that Jesus?" He saith, "I do not know."

13 Then they bring him, namely, the heretofore blind man, unto the council of the PHARISEES.

14 Now it was the sabbathday when Jesus made the clay, and opened the man's eyes.

15 Again, therefore the PHARISEES also asked him, How he received his sight? And he said to them, "He put clay upon mine eyes and afterwards I washed myself at the pool of Siloam, and now I SEE.'

16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, "This man Jesus is not from GOD, because he keepeth not strictly the sabbath day, but doeth works thereon." Others said, Others said, "How

can a man who is born a sinner do such miracles as these ?" and there was a schism or dissension among them.

17 They then say to the lately blind man again, “What sayest THOU of him, because he hath opened thine eyes?" And the man said, "He is a PROPHET of God."

18 The JEWS however, did not really believe concerning him, that he had been born blind, and had thus received sight, until they had called in the parents of HIM who had so received sight:

19 And they asked them, saying, "Is THIS man your son, of whom YE his parents say that he was born blind? How then doth he Now at this time SEE?"

20 His parents answered them and said, "We know assuredly that THIS man is indeed our son, and moreover we know that he was born blind:"

21 "But by what means he now seeth, or who hath so opened his eyes, we his parents do NOT know: he is HIMSELF of sufficient age, therefore ask ye HIM: he shall speak for HIMSELF."

22 These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews for the chief Jews had already agreed among themselves, that if any one should acknowledge Jesus to be CHRIST the promised Messias, he should be made an outcast from their synagogue.

25 Whereupon the lately blind man answered and said, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know: ONE thing I do know, that, though I was heretofore blind, I Now see."

26 Whereupon they said to him again, "What did he DO to thee? by what means opened he thine eyes?"

27 He answered them, "I have told you already, but ye hearkened not to me why do ye AGAIN wish to hear it? do YE also wish to become his DISCIPLES ?"

28 Wherefore they reviled him, and said, "THOU art, it seems, a disciple of that Jesus but we are the disciples of MOSES."

32 "From the beginning of time never hath it been heard, that any one opened the eyes of a man who had been actually BORN blind.”

33"If this man Jesus was not from GOD, he would not have been able to do any such thing.'

دو

34 They answered and said to him, "THOU wast born wholly in the guilt of sins, and in ignorance of God, and dost THOU teach US?" And they cast him out of the council chamber.

35 Jesus heard that they had cast him forth out of doors: and having found him, he said to him, "Dost THOU thyself BELIEVE on the promised Son of GOD?"

36 The man answered and said, "WHO is he, O Sir, tell me, that I may believe on him ?"

37 And Jesus said to him, "Thou hast both actually SEEN him, and he who is now talking with thee is HE.”

38 Whereupon he said, "Lord, I BELIEVE on thee:" and he bowed down and worshipped him.

39 And Jesus said, "For the purpose of teaching and of doing just judgment I am come into this evil world: so that they who see NOT, nor under
