Foreword

The impact of weights and measures upon the affairs of mankind is well-nigh universal; and for uniformity in weighing and measuring, there must be accurate, reliable standards of mass and length. Thus, there is a continuing demand for information about the origins of the metrological standards of the United States on the part of students, educators, authors, government officials, and the general public. This publication was prepared to satisfy that demand in part.

A. V. ASTIN, Director.
