Jefferson at Forty-three Photogravure from the Original Painting by Mather Brown. This life portrait, the earliest known of Jefferson, is of considerable historical importance for that reason alone. It was painted in London, in 1786, at the order of John Adams. The artist's receipt for the picture is on the back of the canvas: London, May 12, 1786, Rec'd of his Excellency John Adams, Esq.Six Guinneas for a kit-knt portrait of Mr. Jefferson." The painting is now at the Adams homestead at Quincy, Mass., and is Gyned by Henry Adams, the great-grandson of John Adams.
