KERL'S

ELEMENTS OF COMPOSITION & RHETORIC.

A SIMPLE, CONCISE, THOROUGH AND PRACTICAL WORK ON a new plan. Designed to occupy an intermediate position between Common Grammar and Higher Rhetoric, embodying from each what is most useful to the writer. Cloth, 408 pages. Price $1.25. By mail on receipt of price.

In this work the author has woven together a progressive series of exercises designed to develop skill in the use of words, skill in the construction of sentences, and skill in the finding of thoughts. They are constantly varied to prevent weariness, and where difficult yet important subjects have presented themselves, they are unfolded in the flowing and comprehensive style of common reading. The work occupies an intermediate position between Common Grammar and Higher Rhetoric, embodying from each what is most useful to the writer. Commencing with the simple subject and predicate, it proceeds through their various modifications to sentences of a complex structure, and brings the pupil, step by step, to connected writing, kinds of composition, figures of speech, style, &c. An able critic has said of this book: "Its two capital excellencies are, that it constantly calls into play the invention of the pupil, and sets before him an abundance of examples. Thus while the student is consciously training his power of composition, he is unconsciously familiarizing himself with models of style and thought."

This book and the "First Lessons in Grammar," when studied together, will furnish an elementary course on the English language, or a course of Grammar, Composition and Rhetoric that is quite sufficient for Common Schools; and, when studied in connection with the "Common School Grammar," or "The Shorter Course in Grammar," it will furnish an advanced course in English language, or a course of Grammar, Composition and Rhetoric that is sufficient for the great majority of Academies and Colleges.
