PRIVATE ACTS AND RESOLUTIONS

OF THE

General Assembly of the State of Connecticut,

MAY SESSION, 1870.

At a General Assembly of the State of Connecticut, holden at New Haven, in said State, on the first Wednesday of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy :

INCORPORATING THE ST. MARY'S TEMPERANCE AND BENEVO-
LENT SOCIETY OF NORWICH.

Resolved by this Assemmbly:-SECTION 1. That P. O. Sullivan, Daniel Connahan, John Coyle, Cornelius Corcoran, James Murphy, Christopher Shinors, Patrick Ahern, Patrick McCaffrey, Timothy Kelly, and such other persons as are or hereafter may be associated with them, and their successors be, and they are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate, by the name of "The Saint Mary's Temperance and Benevolent Society of Norwich," and by that name may sue and be sued, and prosecute and defend suits in all courts in this state, and may have and use a common seal, and alter the same at pleasure; may make contracts, and shall be capable in law of purchasing, holding and conveying any real or personal estate for the use and benefit of said society or corporation; provided, that said corporation shall at no time hold real estate of a greater value than five thousand dollars.

HARTFORD AND NEW HAVEN RAILROAD COMPANY.

SEC. 2. Said Society shall have power to prescribe the terms and conditions on which persons may be admitted members thereof, and they may, for such reasonable cause as shall be prescribed by their constitution, expel a member or members thereof.

SEC. 3. The object of said society shall be to promote the cause of temperance, good morals, and mutual assistance in case of sickness or distress; and the funds thereof shall be used only for the above objects—for relief of widows and orphans of deceased members; for the funeral expenses of deccased members, and such other objects consistent with its benevolent purposes, and in promoting the cause of abstinence from the use of intoxicating liquors, as may be prescribed by the constition and by-laws; and to defray the necessary expenses of said society under such restrictions and regulations as said society, by its rules and by-laws may, from time to time, direct.

SEC. 4. Said society shall have power to hold meetings, to appoint al cedful officers, and enact such by-laws, and in such infanner as their constitution may prescribe, and may make such rules and regulations as may be necessary to carry the object of their association into effect. Provided, that such constitution, by-laws, rules and regulations be not inconsistent with the laws of this state or of the United States.

SEC. 5. This act may be altered, amended or repealed at the pleasure of the general assembly.

AUTHORIZING THE HARTFORD AND NEW HAVEN RAILROAD COMPANY TO CONSTRUCT A BRANCH ROAD IN THE TOWN OF MERIDEN.

Resolved by this Assembly:-That the Hartford and New Haven Railroad Company be and is hereby authorized to locate, construct and operate a branch road with single or

double track, and all necessary turnouts and sidings, commencing and intersecting with its present line of railway, at a point near the house of John Pendergrass, in the town of Meriden, and running in a westerly direction to and terminating upon land in said Meriden, owned by Eli Butler, of said Meriden, and held by him in trust for said company, a distance not exceeding one mile from the point of intersection.

And said company is authorized to acquire all lands and all rights of way necessary for the construction of said branch road in the manner provided by sections 474 and 475, title 7, chapter 7, of the revised statutes of this state. And in the location, construction and operation of said branch rail· road, said company shall exercise and enjoy all the rights, privileges and immunities provided and contained in its charter and in the statute laws of this state relating to railroads, and shall be subject to all the restrictions and liabilities provided and contained in its said charter and said statute laws. This resolution may be altered, amended or repealed at the pleasure of the general assembly.

AMENDING THE CHARTER OF THE CONNECTICUT WESTERN RAILROAD COMPANY.

Resolved by this Assembly:-That section 5 of the resolu tion incorporating the Connecticut Western Railroad Com pany, passed May Session, A. D. 1868, be so amended as to authorize said railroad company to locate and construct their said railroad through the town of Windsor, in Hartford county, as fully and completely as if said town had been originally named in said resolution, and that all acts heretofore done by said company relative to locating said railroad, in said town of Windsor be, and the same are hereby approved. Approved May 31st, 1870.
