hold furniture, pictures, etc. ; the Domestic Economy pages are ruled for a summary of each year's financial results; and finally, Miscellaneous pages extend and supplement them. The value of such a record will be readily seen; its editor's name is not given, but we may guess it, Mr. Henry Holt himself.

"THEIR Wedding Garments," to be published by the Scribners on the 15th, is a second homely, helpful book, of the same scope but a little larger than the same author, Mary W. Maclain's "Lifting the Veil," which took well a few years since. It tells the inner life of a young woman, beginning with her school days, in diary form, and is full of pathetic touches. George Smith's great work on "Assyrian Exploration and Dis covery," to be ready at same date, will be splendid with four permanent photographs, and numerous wood-cuts.

ONE of the earliest of the Appletons' books will be "Ten Years among the Spiritualists," by Francis Gerry Fairfield, in which the writer gives many interesting experiences with mediums, and explains the manifestations on the theory of a personal magnetic atmosphere, or, as he calls it, nerve aura. A brief of the book is being given to the public through Scribner's Monthly. Hon. Mr. Biddle's novel of Wash

NOTES IN SEASON.

THE trade may reasonably expect to find "The Last Journals of David Livingstone" about the best selling book of the month. It is a book which it is well to stock up with at the start, and advance orders, to be in time, should be sent to the Harpers at once.

GREVILLE'S MEMOIRS will be published on Saturday by the Appletons (not the Harpers, as previously announced), in 2 vols. 12m0, $4.00. Booksellers should not neglect sending their orders at once and freely, as there will be unquestionably a very large demand for the work.

THE Family Record," nearly ready at Henry Holt & Co.'s, will be a book that should go into every family. It is a quarto volume, containing six series of blanks, printed in dark green ink on fine calendered paper. The volume is intended to include all the particulars of the physical, social, and economical life of the family, and those who make use of it will find it of exceeding interest as well as usefulness. Family page indexes each member of the family by reference to the pages where his record is given more fully; Genealogical pages for notes of ancestry come next; the Tabular pages are for such particulars as date and place of birth, weight and height at successive periods, time of cutting teeth, entry of accidents or diseases, residences, schools, etc.; the Biographical pages are for full particulars of the life, including the child's bright sayings and doings, details of diseases, etc-of these there are enough for twenty-four to each in a family of six; the Heirloom (and other possessions) pages are for entering facts as to inherited or purchased possessions, including notable pieces of house

portraiture of life at the Capital about the war period, is also in advanced preparation.

DODD & MEAD propose to follow "The Starling" with other works of the late Norman McLeod, who was a strong, vigorous, homely writer of great power. His" Character Sketches will be ready in January, and during the month we may also expect Hesba Stretton's life of Christ, called "The Wonderful Life," which will make probably a $1.50 12mo. Judging from her previous books, this work will have a solid strength and effective vigor that will commend it widely.

THAT promising book of Colonel Higginson, the "Young Folk's History of the United States," is promised by Lee & Shepard for this month. It is said to be one of the best books of its kind yet written. Rev. P. C. Headley's "The Island of Fire; or, a Thousand Years of the Old Northmen's Home," is also well forIt will contain much historical informa
