THE EXPRESSMAN AND THE DETECTIVE, by Allan Pinkerton. (W. B. Keen, Cooke & Co.) The facts of this story relate to a heavy robbery which the Adams Express Company suffered in 1858. They are culled from Detective Pinkerton's own experience, and form quite an exciting story. This is the first of a series of stories the author proposes publishing, founded upon incidents in his own varied life. Illustrated, 12mo, cloth, $1.50.

SINGERS AND SONGS OF THE LIBERAL FAITH,

box, with celestial voices, singing-birds, clock, the "Chamber of Peace," a Chickering piano, upright, "for the bed-room of an incurable," and the Christmas-log taken from the hearth of "The Hanging of the Crane." As some articles might be overlooked under the sections named, inclusive of the "Persons of Various Tastes," a special section is devoted to "Miscellaneous," including Hendschel's "Sketches," Webster's "Unabridged," etc., and more, though the last, "Colgate's Toilet Soap, Box of." "Box of" is cleverly indicative of the technique of by Alfred P. Putnam. (Roberts Brothers.) new method." Each selection is accompanied by a poems, are taken altogether from American new method" the alphabetical or any old- biographical sketch of the writer. Mr. Putnam fashioned system is discarded, nobody could has not limited himself in his selection to merepossibly miss" Colgate." We envy the Nation ly sacred writers, but has transferred a poem for the ingenious inventor of the " new mewherever found, if expressive of religious feelthod." What blessing he might bestow uponing or liberal faith, whether in the pages of a the book trade, by suggesting as admirable a method for a Finding List of books as that which makes his index so unfailing a Finding List of Colgate's soaps, Chickering's pianos, and Paillard's music-boxes!

We congratulate the Nation on its success in this new field of enterprise; on its graciously descending from its lofty pedestal to our common standard of trade journalism. And may we record, as another act of self-abnegation, its gratifying withdrawal from the retail book trade, implied in the well-considered omission of those conspicuous lines so frequently met with in its advertising columns, namely, "Orders for books will be filled by the Nation, etc."? How much more becoming to the paragon of literary taste is the substitution of a line which now as motto so fitly graces the cover of "Christmas Gifts" (who does not fully comprehend its meaning after a perusal of the "method?"), "I am weary; yea, my memory is tired."-SHAKESPEARE. 16mo, pp. 36, paper, gratis to subscribers to the Nation, at $5 for fifty weeks, postpaid, or $5.20 for fifty-two weeks. Clergymen, $4. Terms of "indexing,"

BOOKKEEPING SIMPLIFIED, by D. B. Waggener. (D. B. Waggener & Co.) A simple and practical explanation of the system of double bookkeeping. It is clearly and briefly written, and brings the whole system to every one's comprehension. 16mo, cloth, $1; boards, 75 c.

DAVID, KING OF ISRAEL, by the Rev. William M. Taylor. (Harper & Brothers.) The life of the Psalmist, and the lessons to be drawn from it, is here made the subject of twenty-three sermons. Dr. Taylor seems to have entered into his task with great enthusiasm, as his work of fers a most exhaustive treatise of this portion of sacred history. He presents a far-off time with great vividness and reality, and clears up in a scholarly manner the obscurities which must ever puzzle the ordinary Biblical reader. 12mo, cloth, $2.

ISMAILIA, by Sir Samuel W. Baker. (Harper & Brothers.) The history of this expedition, organized by Ismail, Khedive of Egypt, for the suppression of the slave-trade in Central Africa, is narrated by Sir Samuel W. Baker, who be sides the appendage of "Pasha" has some dozen other titles, both civil and military, after his name. Besides being the historian of the expedition he was also the leader of it, his exploits adding new lustre to an honorable name. passed has already been made the subject of The country through which the expedition two works by Sir Samuel Baker; hence the present volume merely traces out the path of the expedition, its various obstacles, and its results. The work is a most interesting one, the wild mode of warfare it describes being something entirely new, while it is written up with a most graphic pen. The volume is an exceedingly

handsome one, and contains a number of tinted maps, portraits, and upwards of fifty fullpage illustrations by Zwecker and Durand. Svo, cloth, $5.

THREE ESSAYS ON RELIGION, by John Stuart Mill. (Henry Holt & Co.) These three essays were written at different periods of Mill's life, and do not present a continuous line of thought. They are separately entitled, "Nature," "Ütility of Religion," and "Theism," and of course embody the author's peculiarly materialistic views. His " Essay on the Life and Writings of Bishop Berkeley" completes the volume. 12mo, cloth, $2.50.

LITTLE SONGS, by Mrs. Eliza Lee Follen. (Lee & Shepard.) This pretty edition of nursery rhymes will be most welcome to the little ones. The illustrations, expressly designed for it by Miss L. B. Humphrey, are extremely attractive. Sq. 16mo, cloth, $1.50.

A HIEROGLYPHIC GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED STATES. (E. P. Dutton & Co.) This is an original attempt to aid in the study of geography. It is the first part of the series, and contains maps of seven of the States. The page looks like the rebus which so excites a child's curiosity and pleases its imagination in the columns of the magazines. It is really a concise description of a State, the explanation to which is given on the next page, if found too puzzling for youthful minds. The designing and drawing was

done by Miss Anna A. Hermans and the engraving by Miss Charlotte B. Cogswell, both of the Cooper Union Engraving School. 4to, cloth, $2.

LIFE, SERMONS, AND SPEECHES OF Rev. NUMA F. REID. (E. J. Hale & Son.) Rev. Dr. Reid was for twenty-six years a Methodist preacher, and for twenty-two a member of the North-Carolina Conference. The biography with which the volume opens was written by his life-long friend, Rev. John W. Lewis. The proceeds realized from the sale of the volume are to be applied to the education of Dr. Reid's younger children. 12mo, cloth, $2; morocco, $3.50. WINTER HOMES FOR INVALIDS, by Joseph W. Howe, M.D. (G. P. Putnam's Sons.) Invalids will find this a very interesting and valuable book for consultation; it gives a succinct account of the distinctive climatic features of the various winter resorts for invalids, and their influence on disease. 12mo, cloth, $1.50.

EUSEBIUS by F. A. March. (Harper & Brothers.) This forms the second volume of the "Douglass Series of Christian Greek and Latin Writers." It contains selections from Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History, relating chiefly to the life and manners of the early ages, and the lives of the apostles. There is an introduction by Prof. A. Ballard, and explanatory notes by Prof. W. B. Owen. 12mo, cloth, red-edged, $1.75.

THE ECLECTIC HISTORICAL ATLAS. (Wilson, Hinkle & Co.) The maps of this atlas, originally published in Thalheimer's Manuals of History, are here issued separately in the form of a hand-atlas, for the convenience of students and general readers. The beauty and accuracy of the maps is sufficiently well known to make any comment unnecessary. 8vo, cloth, $1.50.

THE QUEEN OF THE KITCHEN, by Miss Tyson. (T. B. Peterson & Bros.) These "old Maryland receipts" were carefully compiled from several old family receipt books, which are regarded as heir-looms, many of them being nearly a century old. The volume contains many different styles of cookery, which is in itself a recommendation; it does not come to us entirely new, some of the receipts having been published before in a small volume; but this is so enlarged and improved it may be considered as a new book. 12mo, cloth, $1.75.

MEMORIES: A STORY OF GERMAN LOVE, transated from the German by George P. Upton. Jansen, McClurg & Co.) A charming story of ideal love, full of beauty, tenderness, and pathos, with just enough of plot to serve as a thread upon which to hang brief but intensely interesting essays on theology, art, literature, and social habits, It is beautifully gotten up, and is one of the handsomest books of the kind we have ever received from the West. The page is red-bordered, and the edges gilt. 16mo, cloth, $2.25.

THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, by Jules Verne. (Scribner, Armstrong & Co) The actors in this wonderful romance are five prisoners of war, who attempt by means of a balloon to make their escape from Richmond while it is in a state of siege. They meet with a tempest which wrecks their balloon and casts them upon an unknown and mysterious island." Their adventures here are in true Selkirk style, and near enough the probable to give an air of

truth to some most astonishing exploits and incidents. The story has evidently a sequel, as it ends abruptly and unsatisfactorily. 8vo, cloth, 60 cents; paper, 30 cents.

CLINICAL LECTURES ON DISEASES OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM, by Wm. A. Hammond, M.D. Reported, edited, and the Histories of the Cases prepared, with Notes, by T. M. B. Cross, M.D. (Appleton.) These lectures were delivered at the N. Y. State Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System, and the Bellevue Hospital Medical College. As they were intended especially for students, the chief aim of the author has been to present merely practical views, fully illustrated by cases, with the results derived from treatment, as far as that was possible. The names of author and editor are sufficient guarantees for the merit of the work. 8vo, cloth, $3.50.

portant work.

BRIGADIER FREDERIC: A Story of an Alsatian Exile, is MM. Erckmann-Chatrian's latest work, which will be republished here, in translation, we presume, by the Scribners.

ARCTIC literature is fast increasing. Messrs. Griffin, the naval booksellers at Portsea, England, are about to publish an Arctic and Antarctic navy list, containing the names of every naval officer who has served in Arctic expeditions from 1773 to 1874, the expeditions each served in, with brief biographical notices, and details respecting the sledge-traveling done, books written by, and the after-careers of a large majority. The last has been prepared by Mr. Clements Markham, who served in the Arctic expedition of 1850-51. Lieut. Payer, a participant in three Austrian Arctic explorations, is writing a full account of those expeditions.

ANOTHER posthumous essay of Mr. Mill's is to be given to the public. It seems that he left, partly finished, an essay on Socialism," which will be brought out early in the year.
