Remarks.

The dredge Charleston was
engaged in dredging from Aug.
9 to Aug. 24, 1910, and left Sept.
1, 1910, for Charleston, S. C.
The cost of repairs and extraordi-
nary repairs was due to pre-
paring the dredge for her trip to
Charleston and would probably
have been but very little higher
for the entire year if she had
continued dredging. This, to-
gether with the outstanding lia-
bilities from the previous year,
was the cause of the high cost of
dredging as shown on this re-
port.

Remarks.

1 Formerly Grant.

the

transport

Remodeled from transport to
20-inch dredge at a cost of
$217,724.47 by the Navy Depart-
ment.

3 From July 1 to Sept. 20, 1910,
the dredge was being remodeled
at a cost of $137,075.

4 Transferred from the Quarter-
master's Department to the
Engineer Department, U. S.
Army.

Remarks.

During July, August, and
September this dredge worked
only during the day. During the
balance of the year she worked
day and night.

Special repairs were made to
the dredge during the year,
amounting to $36,864.15, of which
$18,429.44 was paid by the Gal-
veston office and the balance,
$18,434.75, by appropriation for
improving Cape Fear River, N.
C., at and below Wilmington,
which was to be paid back to that
improvement in rent. To June
30, $5,996.03 had been so paid,
leaving a balance of $12.438.72
still due. Only the $5.996.03 paid
back in rent is included in the
above statement.

3 Paid or to be paid by Galves-
ton office, $36.864.15; rent paid to
Galveston office, $10,890; total,
$25.974.15. Net cost to Wilming-
ton office, $83,810.75.

There were 2,734 barrels of fuel
oil on hand June 30, 1911. but as
the cost of the oil was included in
the cost of the work during the
the year, it was also included in
fuel consumed during the year.
