FOR ye were fometimes Darkness, but now are ye Light in the Lord: walk as Children of Light, Eph. v. 8.

What else can we poffibly be but Darkness wandering in Sin, without the Light of Faith, without Christ, and without Love? Let us frequently compare that which we were once of ourselves, with that which we now are thro' the Mercy of God. A Chriftian who makes no Ufe of the Light of Faith, to walk and go forward in the Way to Heaven, is a Traveller who fleeps in the Day Time, and will be fuddenly overtaken by the Night. Lord awaken me that I fleep no more.

O may one Beam of thy bleft Light
Pierce thro',difpel,the Shades of Night,
Touch my cold Breaft with heav'nly fire,
With holy conq'ring Zeal inspire.
For Zeal I figh, for Zeal I pant,
Yet heavy is my Soul and faint:

With Steps unwav'ring, undismay'd,
Give me in all thy Paths to tread.
Single of Heart, O may I be,
Nothing may I defire but Thee,
Far, far from me the World remove,
And all that holds me from thy Love.

St. Michael. AN ND there was War in Heaven; Michael and his Angels fought against the Dragon, and the Dragon fought and his Angels: And prevailed not, neither was their Place found any more in Heaven, Rev. xii. 7, 8.

JESUS CHRIST, and his true Followers, will wage War against the Devil and the World to the End of Time. What would become of us, Lord, if Thou thyfelf didft not fight in our Hearts against the Wiles of the Devil, and the Allurements of the World.Where is perfect Security to be found, if not in Heaven, If a pure Spirit fell without a Tempter, what ought not a Man to fear, who dwells in a Body of Sin, and has the World and the Devil for Adverfaries? That Perfon may be justly faid to fall from Heaven, who falls from the Grace of our heavenly Birth; and he more justly fill, that, after he has fell, ftill defires the Poffibility of falling from Grace. Lord enable us to improve to the best Advantage every Moment of our Lives which remain.

JESUS, my King, to Thee I bow,
Inlifted under thy Command,
Captain of my Salvation, Thou
Shalt lead me to the promis'd Land.

NOT

TOT as though I had already attained, either were already perfect but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus, Phil. iii. 12.

Who will dare flatter himself with having attain'd all, when an Apoftle, quite spent with Toils and Labours for the Sake of God, looks upon himself only as a Beginner? We must not fo much confider the Way we have already gone, as that which remains for us to go, and that which God requires.

Why haft thou apprehended me,
And held my struggling Soul fo faft?
What is the Grace laid up in Thee,
Which I fhall apprehend at last?
The Gofpel-Hope to which I prefs,
Is it not finish'd Holiness?

JESUS, that perfect Good unknown,
Reftlefs, refign'd, I wait to gain :
But give me Strength to follow on,
And strive, and labour, and fuftain,
Nor ever from thine own depart,
'Till Thee I love with all my Heart.
