It was published in England, but can be had in this country. Collier was a professor in Trinity College, Dublin.

503.(1) In a magazine published about twentyfive years ago I have recently read a brilliant essay, entitled "The Plaint of a Commonplace Person, which bears the signature" Pennina Williams." I never have seen this signature elsewhere, and would be glad to know if its owner has written anything else.

(2) I have seen an Italian quotation credited to Fortiguerra, but I do not find mention of any such author in any cyclopedia to which I have access. Can you tell me anything about him?

The Great Work Completed.

The History of the
Christian Church..

By JOHN FLETCHER HURST.

Dr. GEORGE P. FISHER,

Professor of Ecclesiastical

History in Yale University, writes:

[merged small][graphic]

"Volume II is a worthy successor of the volume which preceded it. It is scholarly and at the same time readable. It is so written as

to be instructive to ministers and students of theology, while to intelligent laymen its pages will be equally attractive."

Dr. C. W. RISHELL

Professor of Historical The-
ology in Bartow University, writes:

"The completion of Bishop Hurst's second volume of 'The History of the Christian Church' will be hailed with pleasure by all students of Church History. It has long been looked for, and it will not disappoint the high expectations concerning it. The two volumes constitute an encyclopædia of ecclesiastical history, while they are at the same time thoroughly readable. The story they tell is itself fascinating, and the grouping of the details and the terse and vigorous style employed throughout the entire work make it still more charming. The work is scholarly without being heavy; complete without too many particulars; and it gives the reader secular relations of the Church in the various ages and countries without once losing its character as a history of the Church. All ministers and intelligent laymen will find these volumes a depository of systematized information viewed from the standpoint of Christian philosophy. They are a fitting crown to the life work of a life-long student of the Church of Christ." Two Volumes. Unrivaled Maps and Bibliographies.

"In all the field of books about books, there is nothing else in existence which covers so well and so clearly, so wide a range of subjects. It is impossible to read a single chapter, or even a page of the five hundred contained in the present volume, without either gaining fresh information upon some particular subject, or finding some fact we half know, so clearly stated as to make a lasting and vivid impression upon us. Written by a man thoroughly versed in library lore and methods. Mr Spofford's book will be found of the utmost value by all who either are, or wish to become, attached to library forces."-N. Y. A NEW NOVEL BY THE AUTHOR OF "CHILDREN OF THE MIST."

SONS OF THE MORNING

By EDEN PHILLPOTTS. With Frontispiece. 8vo, $1.50.

This is the first novel written by Mr. Phillpotts since the publication of the beautiful and powerful story, the "Children of the Mist." It represents more nature work and can but add to the reputation that came to him through the earlier book. The keenest and most pertinent word of appreciation for the "Children of the Mist" came from the veteran novelist, R. D. Blackmore, who, "knowing nothing of the author," wrote of "the deep interest, the rare humor and the vivid descriptions that he found in the story. The author of "Lorna Doone" has since passed away, and more directly than could be true of any other English writer, Eden Phillpotts is recognized as his successor.
