Bailey and the Tomboy could not have known each other-they would have been fast friends, and the heroine of so many adventures would have been admitted to membership in the mysterious order of the "Centipedes," even though the colonel would not let her enlist as a child of the regiment. Miss Florence Scovel Shinn has drawn a lot of capital pictures for this capital book. It should be in every home-it would make even a happy home happier. A bright story is that of the "Thoroughbred Mongrel," by Stephen Town send-the gentleman who recently married Mrs. Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is the story of a wretched little mongrel puppy called "Drunken Billy" from its fondness for gin-and-water-a habit contracted in a London dog-fancier's shop-that was palmed off on an unsuspecting lady as a Mexican dog of rare blood and breeding. The story is told by a Skye terrier who lived in the family, aud the adventures of Billy, Hett (the Skye) and Bob, the collie, will amuse every lover of dogs. The pictures by J. A. Shepherd, are brilliantly good (T. Fisher Unwin). woman, which bringeth forgetfulness of all else in the world. "Richard Yea and Nay," by Maurice Hewlett, a romance of Richard the Lion-Hearted, is just issued and has been impatiently waited for by the legion admirers of this brilliant writer. "Linnet," just published by the New Amsterdam Book Co., is one of the posthumous novels of the late Grant Allen and contains a good portrait of the novelist. Messrs. Dana Estes & Co. send us new editions of Herman Melville's fine old romances of the South Seas, "Typee" and "Omoo." A new volume of "Mr. Dooley's Phil- of that pharmakon nepenthe, love of a osophy" (R. H. Russell) is a valuable collection of Mr. Dooley's reflections upon marriage, politics, the servant-girl problem, Americans abroad, alcohol as food, the future of China, and many other subjects of instant concern. This book is as good as the first one, and it has illustrations by Nicholson, Kemble, Opper and others, who can scarcely adorn the amiable sagacities of this good man. Rather more "literary," if not more popular, is a new edition of Austin Dobson's memoir of "Henry Fielding," which comes from Messrs. Dodd, Mead & Co. First published in 1883, this work has stood the test of time, and, like all the author's biographical studies, is a model of accurate information and scholarly workmanship. Mr. John Fox, Jr., has just published a novel called " Crittenden," which is in his best vein and will strengthen his hold on a large circle of readers (Scribners). It is a love story of Kentucky with a background of the Spanish war. "The Eagle's Heart" is Mr. Hamlin Garland's contribution to the season's literature (Macmillan) and tells the story of a western boy who grew up divided between devotion to the spirits of earth and sky and woodland, and the influence Messrs. D. Appleton & Co. issue a fine new edition of "David Harum," with scores of illustrations by Mr. B. West Clinedinst. This is one of the most attractive books of the season, and will find a resting-place on many a plain man's book-shelf-David, we fancy, "clutches the heart" of the American quite as much as the Rev. Dr. Watson. The Baker & Taylor Co. issue a book called "The Real David Harum," in which the disputed identification of Harum with Hannum, of Homer, N. Y., is insisted upon. The same publishers issue "Expansion," a new book by Dr. Josiah Strong, in which the author admits and approves the elasticity, in dimensions, of our country. 1 50 1 50 1 50 I 25 I 25 HAMILTON (M.).
