"Here he meets the dusky ruler and is made to feel his savage power. There is fine contrast between the different ways in which the selfish, brutal instincts of each crop out. The author has made a very effective picture in showing up the wild, selfish instincts in civilized man, aud refinement and honor in the savage. He gives vivid descriptions of the barbaric rites of the savages. Both of the stories are strong in scenic effects. Both stories are tales of love, with all the tantalizing adventures which only a Haggard could devise and describe. The stories are delightfully fresh. They revel in scenes of barbaric splendor and savage horror. They are amusing, exciting, clever and always well written. Beautiful illustrations give just the right finishing touch to the book.

STANLEY J. WEYMAN
SOPHIA

By STANLEY J. WEYMAN, author of "A Gentleman of France," "Under the Red Robe," "The Castle Inn," etc., etc. With 12 illustrations. Crown 8vo, cloth, ornamental, $1.50.

"Quite the best thing, since 'A Gentleman of France,' that Stanley Weyman has done is his new romance, 'Sophia. It is the story of a girl whose scheming relatives try to turn her heart from a worthless adventurer to a nobleman whom she dislikes, but to whom, with her own consent, curiously, accident and fate and finally love bind her. The time of the action, and there is plenty of it, is that of George II., and there are pages that remind one of the charm of Miss Burney. The book is well worth the reading."-New England Magazine.

"Sophia' contains, in its early part, a series of incidents that is, we believe, the most ingenious yet planned by its author. The adventure develops and grows,

the tension increase with each page, to such an extent that the hackneyed adjective breathless' finds an appropriate place. None, not even the most hardened and omnivorous novel reader, can follow the adventures of Sophia, her brother, Sir Hervey Coke, the adventuress, and the Irishman with many aliases, without being carried along by it at top speed until the end is reached, and Sir Hervey reveals himself a knight in laced coat and silken stockings."-Mail and Express, N. Y.

WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL
TO LADYSMITH VIA
PRETORIA

[ocr errors]

By WINSTON SPENCER CHURCHILL, author_of "The River War: Being an Account of the Reconquest of the Soudan,' "The Story of the Malakand Field Force, 1897," etc., etc. With Maps and Plans. Crown 8vo, $1.50.

"We can heartily recommend Mr. Winston Churchill's book as one from which a great deal may be drawn for the right understanding of the situation. He has not only a good head for a political problem, but he has also wonderful eyes to observe and a fluent pen to record."

-Spectator.

"The author's story of his escape from the Boer military prison is told in a simple, straightforward manner. When he reached the front again it was on the banks of the Tugela River. And here the narrative becomes really absorbing, for the operations there are yet fresh in the minds of all who have followed the progress of the war in South Africa. A plain and comprehensive diagram enables the reader to get at the exact situation before Spion Kop, and the story of Acton Homes and the kop itself is told with succinct clearness. . . . It's a good tale, and well told."-New York Times.

WAR AND LABOUR

By MICHAEL ANITCHKOW. 8vo, pp. xii.-578, $5.00. "This book is divided into three parts, each of which will be found of real value to those who study questions of war and peace. (1) The prospect of energetic cooperation between nations with a view to establishing free frontiers, by means of which, according to Michael Anitchkow, peace can be better served than by additions made to armaments. (2) The causes of contemporary international antagonism. (3) The free trade and labor questions at the present time, and other matters too numerous to indicate in a single paragraph. The opinions of famous economists of all nations are submitted to searching analysis, till, by logical progression, the author destroys the theory that war will kill war, continuing with the statement in uncompromising terms of his belief that perpetual peace is by no means a visionary ideal."

sales, but is second to none in quality. Already in its fifteenth edition, it is fast approaching the 100,000 mark, and the demand in the summer time, which is usually small, has compelled the publishers to go again to press within the month.

"The Conspirators," by Robert W. Chambers, is now in its seventh edition, although it was only published in April last. The book, which is also attracting a great deal of attention in England, is an admirably told romance of the present day at a European court. Mr. Chambers, who is always good, is here at his best.
