10 For God is not unrighteous, to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have fhewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the faints, and do minifter.

11 And we defire that every one of you do fhew the fame diligence, to the full affurance of hope unto the end:

12 That ye be not flothful, but followers of them, who through faith and patience inherit the promises. 13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could fwear by no greater, he fware by himself,

14 Saying, Surely bleffing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And fo, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.

16 For men verily fwear by the greater and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.

17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to fhew unto the heirs of promife the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath :

18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impoffible for God to lie, we

tion, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope fet before us:

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the foul, both fure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the vail;

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever, after the order of Melchifidec.

OW faith is the fubftance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not feen.

2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.

3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, fo that things which are feen were not made of things which do appear.

4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent facrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead, yet fpeaketh.

5 By faith Enoch was tranflated, that he fhould not fee death; and was not found, because God had translated him for before his tranflation

tranflation he had this teftimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impoffible to please him. For he that cometh to God muft believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently feek him.

7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the faving of his houfe; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he

went.

9 By faith he fojourned in the land of promife as in a ftrange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Ifaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the fame promise :

10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11 Through faith alfo Sara herfelf received ftrength to conceive feed, and was delivered of a child when fhe was paft age, because he judged him faithful who had

14 For they that fay fuch things declare plainly that they feek a country.

15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16 But now they defire a better country, that is, an heavenly. Wherefore God is not afhamed to be called their God, for he hath prepared for them a city.

17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Ifaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only-begotten fon. 18 Of whom it was faid, That in Ifaac fhall thy feed be called:

19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up even from the dead; from whence

alfo he received him in a

figure.

20 By faith Ifaac bleffed Jacob and Efau concerning things to come.

28 Through faith he kept the paffover and the sprinkling of blood, left he that deftroyed the first-born should touch

them.

29 By faith they paffed through the Red-fea as by

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compaffed about seven

22 By faith Jofeph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Ifrael; and gave command-days. ment concerning his bones.

23 By faith Mofes, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they faw he was a proper child and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.

24 By faith Mofes, when he was come to years, refufed to be called the fon of Pharaoh's daughter;

25 Choosing rather to fuffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of fin for a feafon;

26 Efteeming the reproach of Chrift greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had refpect unto the recompence of the reward.

27 By faith he forfook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured as feeing him who is invifible.

31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the fpies with peace.

32 And what fhall I more fay? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samfon, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets :

33 Who through faith fubdued kingdoms, wrought righteoufnefs, obtained promifes, ftopped the mouths of lions,

34 Quenched the violence of fire, efcaped the edge of the fword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not ac

cepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better refurrection :

36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

37 They were ftoned, they were fawn asunder, were tempted, were flain with the fword: they wandered about in fheep-fkins and goat-skins; being deftitute, afflicted, tormented;

38 (Of whom the world was not worthy) they wandered in deferts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And these all having obtained a good report, through faith, received not the promife:

40 God having provided fome better thing for us, that they without us fhould not be made perfect.

was fet before him, endured the crofs, defpifing the fhame, and is fet down at the right hand of the throne of God.

3 For confider him that endured fuch contradiction of finners against himself; left ye be wearied and faint in your minds.

4 Ye have not yet refifted unto blood, ftriving against fin.

5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation, which speaketh unto you as unto children, My fon, defpife not thou the chaftening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

6 For whom the Lord loveth he chafteneth, and fcourgeth every fon whom he receiveth.

7 If ye endure chaftening, God dealeth with you as with fons: for what fon is he whom the father chafteneth not?

8 But if ye be without chaftifement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye baftards, and not fons.

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh, which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: fhall we not much rather be in fubjection unto the Father of fpirits, and live?

10 For they verily for a

few days chaftened us, after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holinefs.

II Now no chaftening for the present feemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

13 And make straight paths for your feet, left that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man fhall fee the Lord:

15 Looking diligently, left any man fail of the grace of God; left any root of bitternefs fpringing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Left there be any fornicator, or profane perfon, as Efau, who for one morfel of meat fold his birthright.

17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the bleffing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance,though he fought it carefully with

tears.

18 For ye are not come

unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blacknefs, and darkness, and tempeft,

19 And the found of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard, intreated that the word fhould not be spoken to them any more:

20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it fhall be ftoned, or thruft through with a dart:

21 And fo terrible was the fight, that Mofes faid, I exceedingly fear and quake :)

22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerufalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

23 To the general affembly and church of the firstborn which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of juft men made perfect,

24 And to Jefus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of fprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.

25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they efcaped not, who refused
