14 And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.

15 And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he fent him into his fields to feed fwine.

16 And he would fain have filled his belly with the hufks that the fwine did eat and no man gave unto him.

17 And when he came to himfelf, he faid, How many hired fervants of my father's have bread enough and to fpare, and I perish with hunger!

18 I will arife, and go to my father, and will fay unto him, Father, I have finned against heaven and before thee,

19 And am no more worthy to be called thy fon: make me as one of thy hired fervants.

20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father faw him, and had compaffion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kiffed him.

22 But the father faid to his fervants, Bring forth the beft robe, and put it on him; and put a ring on his hand, and fhoes on his feet:

25 Now his elder fon was in the field and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard mufick and dancing.

26 And he called one of the fervants, and asked what these things meant?

27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come: and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him.

29 And he answering faid to his father, Lo, these many years do I ferve thee, neither tranfgreffed I at any time thy commandment; and yet thou never gaveft me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:

21 And the fon faid unto him, Father, I have finned 30 But as foon as this thy against heaven and in thyfon was come, which hath

devoured thy living with much oweft thou unto my harlots, thou haft killed for lord? him the fatted calf.

31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we fhould make merry and be glad for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

CHAP. XVI.

ND he faid alfo unto his difciples, There was a certain rich man which had a steward; and the fame was accufed unto him, that he had wafted his goods.

2 And he called him, and faid unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship: for thou mayeft be no longer fteward.

3 Then the fteward faid within himfelf, What fhall I do? for my lord taketh away from me the stewardship: I cannot dig, to beg I am afhamed.

4 I am refolved what to do, that, when I am put out of the ftewardship, they may receive me into their houses.

5 So he called every one of his lord's debtors unto him, and faid unto the firft, How

6 And he said, An hundred measures of oil. And he said unto him, Take thy bill, and fit down quickly, and write fifty.

7 Then faid he to another, And how much owest thou? And he faid, An hundred measures of wheat. And he faid unto him, Take thy bill, and write fourfcore.

8 And the lord commended the unjuft fteward, because he had done wifely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light.

9 And I fay unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteoufnefs, that when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

10 He that is faithful in that which is leaft is faithful alfo in much and he that is unjust in the least is unjust alfo in much.

11 If therefore ye have, not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your truft the true riches?

12 And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who fhall give you that which is your own?

13 No fervant can ferve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other or else he will hold to the one, and defpife the other. Ye cannot ferve God and mammon.

14 And the Pharifees alfo, who were covetous, heard all these things, and they derided him. I

15 And he faid unto them, Ye are they which juftify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly efteemed among men is abomination in the fight of God. 16 The law and the prophets were until John: fince that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man preffeth into it.

17 And it is eafier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

21 And defiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his fores.

22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bofom. The rich' man also died, and was buried;

23 And in hell he lifted up his eyes being in torments, and feeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bofom.

24 And he cried, and faid, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and fend Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame.

25 But Abraham faid, Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedft thy good things, and likewife Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tor

18 Whofoever putteth away his wife and marrieth another, committeth adultery and whofoever mar-mented. rieth her that is put away from her husband, committeth adultery.

19¶ There was a certain "rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared fumptuously every day:

20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus,

26 And befide all this, be tween us and you there is a great gulf fixed: fo that they which would pafs from hence to you cannot: neither can they pafs to us that would come from thence.

27 Then he faid, I pray thee therefore, father, that D 2

28 For I have five brethren that he may teftify unto them, left they alfo come into this place of torment.

29 Abraham faith unto him, They have Mofes and the prophets let them hear them.

30 And he faid, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31 And he faid unto him, If they hear not Mofes and Coprophets, neither will hey be perfuaded though 1 rofe from the dead.

CHAP. XXIII.

ND the whole multitude of them arofe, and led him unto Pilate.

2 And they began to accufe him, faying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Cefar, faying, that he himself is Chrift a King.

3 And Pilate asked him, faying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he anfwered him and faid, Thou fayeft it.

4 Then faid Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this

more fierce, faying, He ftirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to, this place.

6. When Pilate heard of Galilee, he afked whether the man were a Galilean?

7. And as foon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurifdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerufalem at that time.

8 And when Herod faw Jefus, he was exceeding glad, for he was defirous to fee him of a long feafon, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

9 Then he queftioned with him in many words: but he answered him nothing.

10 And the chief priests and scribes ftood and vehemently accused him.

II And Herod with his men of war fet him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and fent him again to Pilate.

12 And the fame day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between

themselves.

14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me as one that perverteth the people and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching thofe things whereof ye accuse him :

15 No, nor yet Herod: for I fent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

24 And Pilate gave fentence that it should be as they required.

25 And he released unto them him that for fedition and murder was caft into prifon, whom they had defired; but he delivered Jefus to their will.

18 And they cried out all at once, faying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas :

19 Who for a certain fedition made in the city, and for murder was caft into prifon. 20 Pilate therefore willing to release Jefus, fpake again to them.

21 But they cried, faying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22 And he faid unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him; I will therefore chaftife him, and let him go.

23 And they were inftant with loud voices, requiring

on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which alfo bewailed and lamented him.

28 But Jefus turning unto them, faid, Daughters of Jerufalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

29 For, behold, the days are coming in the which they fhall fay, Bleffed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave fuck.

30 Then fhail they begin to fay to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
