request with joy,)

5 For your fellowship in the gofpel from the first day until now;

13 So that my bonds in Chrift are manifeft in all the palace, and in all other places;

6 Being confident of this 14 And many of the brethren in the Lord waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jefus Chrift:

,,,

7. Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inafmuch as both in my bonds, and in the defence and confirmation of the gofpel, ye all are partakers of my grace.

8 For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jefus Chrift.

15 Some indeed preach Chrift even of envy and ftrife; and fome alfo of good will:

16 The one preach Chrift of contention, not, fincerely, fuppofing to add affliction to my bonds:

[ocr errors]

17 But the other of love, knowing that I am fet for the defence of the gospel.

18 What then? notwithftanding every way, whether pretence or.. in truth, Chrift is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice,

9 And this I pray, that your love may abound yet in more and more in knowledge, and in all judgement; io That ye may approve things that are excellent that ye may be fincere, and without offence till the day of Chrift;

;

11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jefus Chrift unto the glory and praise of God.

12 But I would ye fhould understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;

19 For I know that this fhall turn to my falvation. through your prayer, and the fupply of the Spirit of Jefus Chrift,

20 According to my earneft expectation, and my hope, that in nothing I fhall be afhamed, but that with all boldnefs as always, fo now alfo, Chrift fhall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life or by death,

21 For to me to live is

Chrift, and to die is gain.

22 But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I fhall choose I wot not.

23 For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a defire to depart, and to be with Chrift; which is far better: 24 Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful

for you.

25 And having this confidence, I know that I fhall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;

26 That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jefus Chrift for me, by my coming to you again.

27 Only let your converfation be as it becometh the gofpel of Chrift: that whether I come and fee you, or elfe be abfent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye ftand faft in one fpirit, with one mind, ftriving together for the faith of the gospel;

28 And in nothing terrified by your adverfaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of falvation, and that of God.

29 For unto you it is given in the behalf of Chrift, not only to believe on him, but alfo to fuffer for his fake;

30 Having the fame conflict which ye faw in me, and now hear to be in me.

CHAP. II.

F there be therefore any confolation in Chrift, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

2 Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like minded, having the fame love, being of one accord, of one mind,

3 Let nothing be done through ftrife, or vain glory, but in lowlinefs of mind let each efteem other better than themfelves.

4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man alfo on the things of others..

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jefus :

6. Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:

7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a fervant, and was made in the likeness of men:

8 And being found in fafhion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

9 Wherefore God allo hath highly exalted him, and

given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jefus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth:

II And that every tongue fhould confefs, that Jefus Chrift is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my prefence only, but now much more in my absence; work out your own falvation with fear and trembling.

13 For it is God which worketh in you, both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

14 Do all things without murmurings and difputings: 15 That ye may be blamelefs and harmless, the fons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverfe nation, among whom ye fhine as lights in the world:

18 For the fame caufe alfo do ye joy, and rejoice with me.

19 But I truft in the Lord Jefus, to fend Timotheus fhortly unto you, that I alfo may be of good comfort when I know your state.

20 For I have no man like minded, who will naturally care for your ftate...

21 For all feek their own, not the things which are Jefus Chrift's.

22 But ye know the proof of him, that as a fon with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

23 Him therefore I hope to fend presently, fofoon as I shall fee how it will go with me.

24 But I truft in the Lord, that I also myself fhall come fhortly.

25 Yet I fuppofed it neceffary to fend to you Epaphroditus, my brother and companion in labour, and fellow-foldier, but your mesfenger, and he that ministered to my wants.

26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heavinefs, because that ye had heard that he had been fick.

27 For indeed he was fick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me alfo, left I fhould have 8 forrow

in the Lord with all glad-gain to me, those I counted nefs; and hold such in repu- lofs for Chrift.

write the fame things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.

2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concifion.

13 Brethren, I count not myfelf

myself to have apprehended: ye have us for an enfample. but this one thing I do, forgetting thofe things which are behind, and reaching forth unto thofe things which are before,

14 I prefs toward the mak, for the prize of the hignaling of God in Chrift Jefus.

15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwife minded, God thall reveal even this unto you,

16-Neverthelefs whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the fame rule, let us mind the fame thing.

17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk fo, as

19 Whofe end is deftruction, whole god is their belly, and whofe glory is in their fhame, who mind earthly things.)

20 For our converfation is in heaven; from whence alfo we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jefus Chrift:
