ON THE BIRTH OF THE PRINCE OF WALES.

HARK! from the Tower of London,

The cannon's thundering voice,

Bids all the sons of Britain

Throughout her coasts rejoice! Gladly the proud old city

To waiting realms makes known, Her's is another blessing,

An heir to Britain's throne?

On, onwards spread the tidings-
The sunny land they gain,
Where England's red-cross banner,
Floats in the skies of Spain;
From the steeps of fam'd Gibraltar,
Again the cannon's roar,
Speeds on the joyful message
To Afric's western shore.

'Tis heard in that lone island
Apart in ocean wide,
Where, England's pining captive,
The world's great master, died:
'Tis heard in that vast mountain
Whose height gigantic forms,
The old world's furthest barrier,
The ancient Cape of storms.*
* Cape of Good Hope,

Across the southern tropic

On, on, the tidings roll,
And reach the lovely regions
Which gem th' Antarctic Pole;
To every exile's homestead,
O'er desert tracts they fly,
From all her infant cities
Australia makes reply.

Upon the banks of Indus
The glad event is known,
From the heights of Himalaya
To the vallies of Ceylon :
'Tis told where snow-clad winter
On cold Imaus reigns,

'Tis told beyond the Ganges
On Assam's fervid plains.

A hundred towns have hailed it,
Amidst Columbia's seas,
Where lie the Western Indies,

Fanned by the tropic breeze:

The forests of Guiana

The mighty echo wakes,

And it rolls its deep-mouthed utt'rance O'er the Canadian Lakes.

Quebec, Montreal, Toronto,

Now speed the tidings forth,

Far to the icy boundary
Of the extremest North :
Till they die away in silence
Where, in the realms of frost,
The last faint trodden footsteps
Of England's rule are lost.

North, South, East, West-wherever

The subject countries pay,

The fealty or the homage

Which marks old England's swayWhere'er the red cross flutters,

Where'er a tone, a word,

Breathed in old England's accents,
From English lips is heard,

There may the warm thanksgiving
Arise from millions-there
Be breathed from Christian spirits
The Christian's fervent prayer:
For wisdom and for virtue,

And plenteous showers of grace,
To bless the hope of England,
And England's favoured race!

And thou, our royal Infant !

Whose birth such pomp attends,

Of all the earthly honour

That on thine head descends,

Of all thou canst inherit,

To thee, the richest part,

Lies in thine own small kingdom,
Thy Father's, Mother's, heart.

ON THE APPROACHING FALL OF THE

PAPAL AND MOHAMMEDAN POWER,

AND THE

CLEANSING OF THE JEWISH SANCTUARY.

BY REV. F. FYSH, M.A.

THE object of the writer of this little tract is to show from Scripture that we are living on the eve of great events, which will, ere long, burst on the world, and, it is to be feared, even on many Christians, 66 thief."

1. There are two chronological prophecies which show that the fall of the Ottoman Empire is at hand.

The first of these is Rev. ix. 15. "An hour, a day, a month, and a year," are, in symbolical language, equivalent to 391 days and 15 days. On the 13th of June, 1844, the Turks will have had possession of Constantinople 391 years and 15 days. That the Turks will then have a fall may be expected. Whether they will lose Constantinople or not, time will decide.

The second chronological prophecy referring to the Mohammedan power is Dan. xii. 7. “A time, times, and a half," denote 1260 years. The year 1844 is the Ottoman year 1260. The Mahommedans reckon by lunar years, commencing with the Hegira, or MARCH, 1842.

S

Flight of Mahommed in A.D. 622. In 1844 a period of 1260 lunar years will have elapsed from the Hegira. The fall of Mahommedan power may, therefore, be expected about that time.

2. The fall of the Church of Rome will immediately follow the fall of the Turkish power. When Cyrus had dried up the water of the river Euphrates, Babylon was taken. In like manner, when the mystical Euphrates is "dried up," the mystical Babylon will fall. See Rev. xvi. 12-19.

25;

But this is not all. From Dan. vii. Rev. xi. 2, 3; xii. 6-14; xiii. 5; we learn that the Papal power is to last 1260 years. In 1844, a period of 1260 years will have elapsed since 584, about which time the "ten" kingdoms of Europe sprung up. Pelagius Secundus was then Pope, the first Roman Pontiff who claimed to be infallible. He had, therefore, a mouth speaking great things, and a look more stout than his fellows ;” (Dan. vii. 20) “ a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies." (Rev. xiii. 5.)

66

It is also observable of this Pontiff that the number of his name, PELAGIVS SECVNDVS, is 666. (Rev. xiii. 18.)
