Tkt captivity confirmed. Chap. >

14 Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it j and the city is given into the hand ot' the Chaldeans, that fightagainft it, becauleof the (word, and of the famine, and of the pestilence: and what thou hast spoken Is come to pass; and, behold, thou l'eest it.

15 And thou halt laid unto me, O Lord God, Buy thee the field for money, and take witnesses; for the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

361] Then came the word of the Lord unto Jeremiah, faying,

17 Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all rleih: Is there any tiling too hard for me?

28 Therefore thus faith the Lord; Behold, I will givethis city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:

19 Andthe Chaldeans, thatfightagainst this city, shall come and set fire on this city, and burn it with the houses, upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal, and poured out drink offerings unto other gods, to provoke me to anger.

jo For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel haveonly provoked me to anger with the work of their hands, faith the Lord.

31 For this city hath been to me as a provocation of mine anger aud of my fnry from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I lhould remove it from before my faae.

31 Because of all the evil of the children of Israel and of the children of Judah, which they have done to pro. voke me to anger, they, their kings, their princes, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

35 And they have turned unto me the back, and not the face: though I taught them, riling up early and teaching them, jet they have not hearkened to receive instruction.

3+But they set their abominations in the house, which is called by my name, to defile it.

j 5 And they built the high places of Baal, which art in the valley of the son of Hinnorrt, to cause their Ions and their daughters-to pass through the fire unto Mo(ech; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they (hould do this abomination, to cause J i»dah to sin.

cxiii. Gods judgement and mercy.

36 fl And now therefore thus faith the Lor D,theGodof Israel,concerning this city, whereof yelay, It (hallbe delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence;

37 Behold, I will gather them out of all countries, whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath; and I will bring them again unto this place, and I will cause them to dwell safely:

38 And they shall be my people, and I will be their God:

39 And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them ami of their children after them:

40 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they stiall not depart from me.

41 Yea, I will rejoice over them to do them good, and I will plant them in this land assuredly with my whole heart and with my whole foul.

41 For thus faith the Lord; Like as I have brought all this great evil upon this people, so will I bring upon them all the good that I have promised them.

43 And fields shall be bought in this land, whereof ye fay, // is desolate without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.

44. Men shall buy fields for money, and subscribe evidences, and seal them, and take witnesses in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of, Judah, and in the cities of the mountains, and in the cities of the valley, and in the cities of the south: for I will cause their captivity to return, faith the Lord.

CHAP. XXXIIT.

i A return promised. 15 Christ, the Branch

of righteousness.

MOREOVER the word of the Lor n came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet (hut up in the court of the prison, laying,

zThus faith the Lord the maker thereof, the Lo R D that formed it, to establish it; The Lord is his name;

3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

4 For thus faith the Lord, the God, of Israel, concerning the Ironies of thin city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, »nd by the sword;

Tti s They

Gods promises to his people. JEREMIAH Christ, the righteous Branch.

5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies ot" men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fu-y, and for all whole wickednels I have hid my face from this city.

6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveil unto them the abundance of peace and truth.

7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the, first.

X And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have linned, and whereby they have tranlgrefled against me.

y And it lhall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour'before all the nations of the earth, which (hall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they lhall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.

to Thus faith the Lord; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye fay jhall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,

11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall fay, Praise the Lord of hostsi for the Lord is good; for his mercy endweth for ever: and of them that (hall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the Lord. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, faith the Lord.

ii Thus faith the LoRoof hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, (hall be an habitation of sliepherds causing their flocks to lie down.

13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, mail the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, (kith the Lord.

14. Behold, the days come, faith the Lord, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.

15 ^f In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness

to grow up unto David; and he lhall execute judgement and righteousness in the land. .. • ,

16 In those days (hall Judah be laved, and Jerusalem (hall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith he (hall be called, The Lord our righteousness.

17 For thus faith the Lonn; David shall never want a man to (it upon the throne of the house of Israel;

18 Neither (hall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.

19 And the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah, saying,

20 Thus faith the Lor D; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;

2 1 Then may also my covenant be bro ken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.

22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.

23 Moreover the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying,

24.C0niide.-est thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the Lo R D hath chosen, be hath even cast them oft"? thus they have despised my people, that they (hotild be no more a nation before them. '.

25 Thus faith the Lord; If my covenant be not with day and night, ami if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;

26 Then will I cast away the feed of Jacob, and David my_ servant, Jo that I will not take any of his feed to be rulers over the feed of Abraham,_ Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

CHAP. XXXIV. Jeremiah prophelieth the captivity o/Z'deltiah, and the city.

TH E word which came unto Jeremiah from the Lo R D , when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and all nis army, and all the kingdoms of the earth of his dominion, and all the P^op''fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities thereof, saying,

2 Thus faith the Lord, the Godlot Israel; Go and speak to Zedekiah king of Judah, and tell him, Thus faith the

Lord;

[blocks in formation]

Lor D; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he (hall burn it with fire:

3 And thou shalt not escape out os his hind, but (halt surely be taken, and delivered into his hand; and thine eyes shall behold the eyes of the king ot' Babylon, and he sliall speak with theemouth to mouth, and thou (halt go to Babylon.

4 Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Zedekiah king of Judah: Thus faith the Loro of thee, Thou (halt not die by the sword:

5 But thou slialt die in peace: and with the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings which were before thee, so mail they burn odours for thee; and they will lament thee, faying, Ah lord! for I have pronounced the word, faith the Lord.

6 Then Jeremiah the prophet spake all these words unto Zedekiah king of Jodah in Jerusalem,

7 When the king of Babylon's army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against L.ichifh, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.

8 This is the word that came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, after that the king Zedekiah had made a covenant with all the people which ivere at Jerusalem, to proclaim liberty unto them;

9 That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, hi*g an Hebrew or an Hebrewess, go free; that none should serve himself of them, to isiit, of a Jew his brother.

Io Now when all the princes, and all the people, which had entered into the covenant, heard that every one (hould let his manservant, and every one his maidservant, go free, that none should serve themselves of them any more, then they obeyed, and let them go.

ii But afterward they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids.

ii Therefore the word of the Lor D came to Jeremiah .from the Lord,lay ing,

i3Thus faith the Lord, the God of Ifaelj I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondmen, saying,

1+ At the end of seven years let ye go J^ery man his brother an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee; and when he hath served thee six years, tliou slialt let "in go free from thee: but yeur fathers

hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear.

15 And ye were now turned, and had done right in my sight, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name:

16 But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his serva/it, and every man his handmaid, whom he had (et at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants, and for handmaids.

17 Therefore thus faith the Lo R D ; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, faith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth. ■

18 And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, which have not performed the words of the covenant which they had made before me, when they cut the calf in twain, and passed between the parts thereof,

19 The princes of Judah, and the princes of Jerusalem, the eunuchs, and tha priests, and all the people of the land, which passed between thepartsofthecklfj

101 will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat unto the fowls of the heaven, and to the beasts of the earth.

zi And Zedekiah king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of them that seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babylon's army, which are gone up from you.

»2 Behold, I will command, faith the Lor D, and cause them to return to this city; and they (hall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation without an inhabitant.

CHAP. XXXV.

1 By tie obedience of the Rechabites, 12 the

Jews' disobedience is condemned.

THE word which came unto Jeremhah from the Lord in the davs of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king.of Judah, saying,

1 Go unto the houseof the Rechabites, and speak unto them,and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of tie chambers, and give them wine to drink. T t 3 3 Then

disobedience threatened. J E R E MI All Of the Reclmbites and the Jews.

3 Then I took Jaazaniali (he son of Jeremiah, the son ot" Habiziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole boille of the Rechabites;

4 And I brought them into the house of the Lor o, into the chamber of the sous of llanan, the son of Igdaliah, a inan of God, which -was by the chamber os the princes, which ivas above the chamber of Maaieiah the son os bhallura, the keeper of the door:

5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.

6 Buttheysaid.We willdrink no*w:ne: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Yeihalldrinkno wine, neither ye, nor your ions for ever:

7 Neither shall ye build house, nor low seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye (hall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land I where ye be strangers.

8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that be hath charged us, to drink no wine all onr days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;

9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:

io But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

11 But it came to pass, when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come, and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the anny of the Syrians: so we dwell at Jerusalem.

11 fl Then came the word of the Lord unto Jerem'mh, saying,

13 Thus faith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel -, Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words? faith the Lo R D .

14. The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, that he commanded his Ions not to drink wine, are performed: for unto this day they drink none, but obey their father's commandment: notwithstanding I have spoken unto you, risingearly and speaking; but ye hearkened not unto me.

»5 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending/Acn, saying, Return ye now every man from his evil way, and amend your doings, and go not after otiier gods to serve them, and ye shall dwell in the

land which'I have given to you and to your fathers: but ye ha*e not inclined your ear, nor hearkt-r.ed unto me.

16 Because the ions of Jonadab the son of Rechab have perfoimed the commandment of their father, which lit commanded them; but this people iuth not hearkened unto me:

17 rhereforethus faith the Lord God of holts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I nave spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered.

18 And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites, Thus faith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according unto all tint he hath commanded you:

to, Therefore thus faith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab (hall not want a man to stand before me for ever.

CHAP. XXXVI. I Banish ivriteth Jeremiah's prcpheiy. Jo Jehoiakimburneththeroli. 17 tiisjut'p Meat. 52 Baruch ivriteth a nenv of)

AND it came to pass in thefounh year of Jehoiakim the ion of Josiifc king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the Lord, laying,

2 Take thee a roll of a book, aud write therein all the words that I havr spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, andagaintt all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, (to:rthe days of Josiah, even unto this diy.

3 It may be that the house of Judiii will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may rerun; every man from bis evil way; that i may forgive their iniquity and their (in

4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch-the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote frum the mouth of Jeremiah all the wardio: the Lord, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.

5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am flint up; I cannot go inW the house of the Lo R D:

6 Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of the Lord in <'it: ears of the people in the Lor n's houle upon the fasting day: and al'" tM (halt read them in the ears of all Jniin that come out of their cities.

7 It may be they will present weir

supplication before the Lord, and will retiirn every one from his evil way : for great ii the anger and the fury that the Lor D lxath pronounced against this people.

8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of the Lord in the Loan's house.

9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth mouth, that they proclaimed a fast before the Lo R D to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.

10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah iu the house of the Lo R r>, in the chamber of Gemariah the sen of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the Lor D's house, in the ears of all the poople.

u When Michaiah the son of Gemamil, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the hook all the words of toe Lord,

Ii Then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: and,To, all the princes fat there, even Elilhama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and EJnathan the ion of Achhor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the Ion of Hananiah, and all the princes.

i?ThenMichaiah declared unto them aH the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of tlu; people.

i+ Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Siielctniah, the son of Culhi, unto Baruch, faying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou halt read in the ears ofthe people, and come. So Baruch the sen of Neriah took the roll in his hand, »nd came unto them.

'S And they said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our cars. So Baruch read it in their ears.

16 Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the woids, they were afraid both one and other, and laid unto Ba. nich, We will surely, tell the king of all these words. ■ -I

17 And they asked Baruch, faying,, Tell ut now, How didst thou write allj these words at his mouth?

i< Then Baruch answered them, He' Pronounced all these words unto me: ]*'*h his mouth, and I wrote them with, •akin the book. . >.,

to Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah j and let no man know where ye be.

20 fl And they went in to the king in. to the court, but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elilhama the scribe, and told all the words iu the ears of the king.

ii So the king sent Jehud* to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Klifhama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the tars of tbeking, and in the ears of all the princes which.stood beside the king.

12 Now the king fat in the winter house in the ninth month : aud there 'was afire on the hearth burning before him.

23 And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or sour leaves, lie cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the sire that ivat on the hearth, Until all the roll was consumed in the sire that ivaj on the hearth. ^

24. Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king nor any ot his servants that heard all these words'.

25 Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.

26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Aziiel, and Shelemiah the ion of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe, and Jeremiah the prophet: but the Lo R D hid than.

27 fl Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned therolL, and die words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, faying,

aS Take.thee again, another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoi»!cim the king of Judah hath burned.

29 And thou (halt lay to Jehoiakim king of Judah, Thus faith the Lor o; Thou halt burned this roil, laying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon sliall ett tainly come and destroy this kind, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

30 Therefore thus faith the Lo K b of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He (hall have none to sit upon the. throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast dtat in the day to the-heat, and in'Mte night to the frost:' ...1 J.- J:l H.'ujci

31 And. I.wall punifli him an*} his seed and his feraajttvfbtfthieir iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil thfet I have pronounced against themj Uut they hearkened not.
