*Commissioner de Peyster was absent because of illness. Commissioner Scanlan was appointed May 20, 1901.

Commissioner Gratwick was appointed April 17, 1901.

Commissioner Putnam resigned. Commissioners Notman and McCarthy were granted leave of absence.

The Board consists of twelve members, and the average attendance during 1901 was eight.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

At the Board's stated meeting of April 10th, the annual election of officers was held, as provided by the by-laws. President William Rhinelander Stewart and Vice-President Enoch Vine Stoddard were unanimously reëlected, the former for the eighth and the latter for the seventh consecutive term, to their respective offices for the ensuing year. The other officers were continued subject to the pleasure of the Board.

APPROPRIATIONS TO THE BOARD BY THE LEGISLATURE OF

1901.

APPROPRIATION BILL.

The appropriation bill, chapter 644 of the Laws of 1901, made the following appropriations for carrying on the Board's work: For the salary of the secretary, $3,500.

For compensation of twelve commissioners as provided by chapter 546 of the Laws of 1896, $3,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

For superintendent of inspection, $2,500; chief clerk, $1,500; clerk, $1,400; statistician, $900; one stenographer, $900; one stenographer, $720; clerk, $600; junior clerk, $480. For temporary help at the Albany office, $500, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

For traveling expenses of the commissioners and secretary while engaged in the discharge of their official duties, $3,500, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

For traveling expenses of the employes of the Department while engaged in their official duties, $2,500, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

For rent, printing, stationery, and other expenses of the office, $5,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

For postage, and expense of transportation of all letters, official documents or other matter sent by express or freight, including boxes or covering for same, $1,200, or so much thereof as may be necessary.

State and Alien Poor.

For salary of the superintendent, $3,000; for the deputy superintendent in New York city, $1,500; for inspector, $1,500; for assistant inspector, $1,200; for transfer agent, Kings county almshouse, $900; for transfer agent, Monroe county almshouse, $180; for transfer agent, Erie county almshouse, $900; for stenographer, $720; for messenger, $300; for traveling expenses of superintendent and inspectors, $3,000; for incidental office expenses, $500; for maintenance, transportation and removal of State, alien and non-resident poor, $26,300, or so much there of as may be necessary.

New York Office.

For superintendent, $1,500; two inspectors, $1,200 each; two inspectors, $900 each; stenographer, $720.

Rochester Office.

For inspector, $1,200, and stenographer, $600.

SUPPLY.BILL.

The supply bill, chapter 645 of the Laws of 1901, made the following additional appropriations to the Board:

For messenger and clerk at the Albany office for the fiscal year ending September 30, 1902, $720.

State and Alien Poor.

For clerk and stenographer for the fiscal year ending September 30, 1902, $600.

APPROPRIATIONS DESIRED FROM THE LEGISLATURE OF 1902. For the secretary of the Board, for salary, $3,500.

The compensation of twelve commissioners as provided by chapter 546 of the Laws of 1896, $2,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary. (This is reduced from $3,000 because of a balance on hand at the end of the last fiscal year.)

For superintendent of inspection, $2,500; chief clerk, $1,500; clerk, $1,400; statistician, $900; one stenographer, $1,200; one stenographer, $720; messenger, $720; clerk, $600; junior clerk, $480.
