therapeutics. This book, although containing but 289 pages, is well illustrated, and is filled with useful knowledge. It opens with a short historical sketch of the development of the currents of high frequency both in America, where they originated, and in Europe, and it is gratifying to see American physicians receive their share of the credit for original work in this line. Following this there are three chapters devoted to electro-physics, or the essentials thereof, in which a very interesting and easily understood explanation of the electron and vibratory theory is given. One hundred and ten consecutive pages are then devoted to a careful consideration of the generation of the high frequency currents, the apparatus used both here and abroad, a comparison of the currents derived from different types of apparatus, the measurement of the current, phenomena, physical properties, methods of application, etc. This difficult task has been well handled by the author, whose statements are concise, clear and forceful. The chapters on therapeutic technic, the physiological and therapeutic action of the various currents are, for the most part, ably done. The absence of exhaustive experiments, case reports and other forms of padding, allows of a clear and connected description, which can be easily digested by the reader. Although the author clearly shows a preference for the Tesla currents, he gives an analysis of all the currents of high frequency, with their limitations and possibilities. Finally, there are three short chapters on the production of the X-ray and the generation of ultraviolent rays and ozone by the high frequency currents. Although the author has given in considerable detail the tech

nique of application of the various high frequency currents, he has preferred to leave out the so-called essentials of the entire subject of electro-therapeutics, and he has compiled a small pocket edition containing these essentials, and he advises a careful perusal of its pages as a preliminary introduction to the present volume.

To be, perhaps, hypercritical, we fail to see the necessity of showing the same cuts a second time, and in one or two instances we believe a better description of apparatus might be given. There are, as usual, a few unimportant typographical errors, although one, in this instance, causes some confusion between a cut of a Piffard spiral and the text. Otherwise the book is well printed, on good paper, substantially bound, and small and light enough to be comfortably held in the hands while reading. The work is instructive, up to date, and exceedingly interesting.

Miscellany.

GOLDEN RULES OF DIETETICS. By A. L. Benedict, A.M., M.D., Member of American Academy of Medicine and of American Gastroenterological Association, etc.; Author of Practical Dietetics. St. Louis: C. V. Mosby Medical Book & Publishing Co.

The title of this book is somewhat misleading, in that the book is not a small volume of rules of dietetics, but is quite an elaborate treatise, suited for the reference library of the scientific physician. It covers thoroughly the general principles and empiric knowledge of human nutrition, and gives analytic tables of foodstuffs, diet lists, rules for infant

feeding and methods of feeding in various diseases. W. M. C.

THE SEXUAL QUESTION. A Scientific, Psychological, Hygienic and Sociological Study for the Cultured Classes. By August Forel, M.D., Ph.D., LL.D. Formerly Professor of Psychiatry at and Director of the Insane Asylum in Zurich, Switzerland. English adaptation by C. F. Marshall, M.D., F.R. C.S., late Assistant Surgeon to the Hospital for Diseases of the Skin, London. Rebman & Co., 1123 Broadway, New York.

Although this is a very delicate subject, the author has handled it in such a way that it has not been injured. On the con

trary, he has so surrounded it by scientific explanation that he has made it strong and sensible. This book should be read by doctors, law-makers and judges, not only for the betterment of mankind, but for the general education of the public. It is not necessary to coincide with the author in all his theories, but, at the same time, they should not be refuted until after careful study of this volume. The book should be read by the intelligent lay public, especially mothers and fathers, so that they will be capable of imparting a proper understanding of this subject to their children. The author presents the question of intemperance and the emancipation of women in a forcible and scientific manner.

Consumptive "Don'ts"

The Director of Public Health and Charities in Philadelphia has issued for public distribution a series of "Don'ts" which are both striking and practical.

Don't spit on the sidewalk; it spreads disease and is against the law.

Don't spit on the floor of your rooms or hallways.

Don't spit on the floor of your shop. Don't cough without holding a handkerchief or your hand over your mouth. Don't kiss a person with a cough or cold.

Don't live in rooms where there is no fresh air.

Don't work in rooms where there is no fresh air.

Don't sleep in rooms where there is no fresh air.

Don't eat without washing your hands. Don't neglect a cough or cold.

Don't waste your money on nostrums for consumption. Go to a doctor or dispensary.

Don't drink whiskey, beer or other intoxicating drink. If you have consumption, it will make it harder for you to get well.-New York State Journal of Medicine.
