From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.

2 What, tho' the spicy breezes
Blow soft o'er Ceylon's isle;
Though ev'ry prospect pleases,
And only man is vile:
In vain with lavish kindness
The gifts of God are strewn :
The Heathen, in his blindness,
Bows down to wood and stone.

3 Shall we, whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
Shall we, to men benighted,
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation! oh, Salvation!
The joyful sound proclaim,
Till each remotest nation
Has learnt Messiah's name.

4 Waft, waft, ye winds, his story;
And you ye waters, roll,
Till, like a sea of glory,

It spreads from pole to pole;
Till o'er our ransom'd nature,
The Lamb for sinners slain,
Redeemer, King, Creator,
In bliss returns to reign.

1 OTHOU from whom all goodness flows, I lift my soul to thee:

In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes,
Good Lord, remember me.

2 When on my aching burden'd, heart,
My sins lie heavily,

My pardon speak, new peace impart;
Good Lord, remember me.

3 When trials sore obstruct my way,
And ills I cannot flee;

O let my strength, be as my day!
Good Lord, remember me.

4 If on my face, for thy dear name,
Shame and reproaches be;

All hail reproach, and welcome shame!
Good Lord, remember me.

5 When in the solemn hour of death,
I own the just decree;

I'll cry with my last parting breath,
Good Lord, remember me.

EPIPHANY.

P. M.

1 BRIGHTEST and best of the Sons of the morning,

Dawn on our darkness and lend us thine aid;

Star of the East, the horizon adorning, Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

2 Cold on his cradle the dew drops are shining,

[ocr errors]

Low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;

Angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all.

3 Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion,

Odours of Edom and off'rings divine? Gems of the Mountain and pearls of the Ocean,

Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?

4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation, Vainly with gifts would his favour

secure;

Richer by far is the heart's adoration, Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

1 ONE there is, above all others,

P. M.

Well deserves the name of Friend; His is love beyond a brother's,

Costly, free, and knows no end; They, who once His kindness prove, Find it everlasting love.

2 Who, of all our friends, to save us,

Could, or would, have shed his blood? But our Saviour died to have us Reconcil'd in Him to God: This was boundless love, indeed! Jesus is a Friend in need.

3 When He liv'd on earth abased,
Friend of sinners was His name;
Now above all glory raised,

Jesu's heart is still the same;
Still He calls them brethren, friends,
And to all their wants attends.

4 Oh! for grace our hearts to soften! Teach us, Lord, at length to love; We, alas, forget too often

What a friend we have above:

But when home our souls are brought,
We will love Thee as we ought.

1 COME, Holy Spirit! come;

S. M.

Let thy bright beams arise;
Dispel the sorrow from our minds,
The darkness from our eyes.

2 Convince us all of sin;

Lead us to Jesu's blood;
And to our wond'ring view reveal
The boundless love of God.

3 Revive our drooping faith;

Our doubts and fears remove;
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of never-dying love.

4 'Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
To sanctify the soul,

To pour fresh life on ev'ry part,
And new-create the whole.

5 Dwell Thou within our breast;
Our minds from bondage free;
So shall we know, and praise, and love,
The Father, Son, and Thee.

19.

C. M.

1 WHEN all thy mercies, O my God,
My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view I'm lost
In wonder, love, and praise!
