1 OUR RESURRECTION

INFERRED FROM

THAT OF CHRIST.

1 CORINTHIANS XV.-35 But some man will say, Hòw are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened except it die: 37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare gràin; it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh; but there is one kind of flesh of mén, another flesh of beasts, another of fishés, and another of birds. 40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sún, and another glory of the mòon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory. 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour, it is raised in glòry: it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

55 O death, where is thy sting? O gràve, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory, through our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

ENCOURAGEMENT AGAINST

TROUBLE.

2 CORINTHIANS 1-12 For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward. 13 For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end; 14 As also ye

have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are ours in the day of the Lord Jesus.

PAUL'S PREACHING

AND SUCCESS.

2 CORINTHIANS 11.-5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in pàrt: that I may not overcharge you all. 6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. 7 So that contrariwise, ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8 Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. 9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. 10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; 11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignòrant of his devices..

PAUL'S HOPE OF IMMORTAL GLORY.

2 CORINTHIANS v.-11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade mèn; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences. 12 For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in heart. 13 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sòber, it is for your cause. 14 For the love of Christ constràineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again. 16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more. 17 Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new crea

ture: old things are passed away and behold, all wings are become new. 18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us; we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. 21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew nò sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

PAUL'S FAITHFULNESS

IN THE MINISTRY.

II. CORINTHIANS VI.-1 We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain. 2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I secured thee : behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.) 3 Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: 4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necéssities, in distrésses, 5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumúlts, in labours, in wátchings, in fastings; 6 By púreness, by knowledge, by long-suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness, on the right hand and on the left, 8 By hónour and dishonour, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; 9 As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; 10 As sorròwful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rìch; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged. 12 Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bòwels. 13 Now for a recompense in the same (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.

PAUL'S FORCED

SELF-COMMENDATION.

2 CORINTHIANS XI.-1 Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly and indeed bear with me. 2 For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 3 But I fear, least by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. 5 For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles. 6 But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been thoroughly made manifest among you in all things. 7 Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exálted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God fréely? 8 I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service. 9. And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from Macedònia supplied and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself. 10 As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achàia. 11 Wherefore? because I love you nót? God knoweth. 12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory they may be found even as we. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 16 I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little. 17 That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. 18 Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also. 19 For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are

in

wise. 20 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face. 21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit, whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly) I am bold also. 22 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abráham? so am I. 23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am mòre; in labours more àbundant: in stripes above measure, in prisons more frèquent, in dèaths oft. 24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. 25 Thrice was I beaten with ròds, once was I stòned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep. 26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brèthren 27 In weariness and painfulness, in wàtchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. 28 Besides those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? 30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities. 31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not. 32 In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a gàrrison, desirous to apprehend me : 33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands.

OF JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH.

GALATIANS II.-6 But of those, who seemed to be somewhat, whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's pèrson: for they who seemed to be somewhat, in conference added nothing to me: 7 But contràriwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; 8 (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was
