At the meeting of the Union for Internal Medicine in Berlin, Franck (Med. News) presented two women whom he had cured of trigeminal neuralgia by injections of a watery solution of osmic acid, 1 to 1.5 per cent. Sometimes a single injection suffices; but if the nerve is not found by the first injection, it is necessary to repeat the attempt. The injection itself is painful, but it is followed by anesthesia in the region of distribution of the nerve. Eulenberg endorsed this statement, cautioning the members always to have a freshly prepared solution on account of the readiness with which osmic acid decomposed. Compression of the Carotids May be M. Jaboulay (Bull. Du Lyon Medical) says that one may effect prompt and effective anesthesia by the compression of the carotids. The carotids need be compressed but a few moments. We will notice that the patient straightens out, closes the eyes, and becomes quiet. The visage becomes blue at first, and then pale. Consciousness is partly, but not completely lost. It is now we may reduce a dislocated shoulder, or coaptate the ends of fractured bones. Our patient remains unconscious for a few moments after pressure is removed. It is now that we may examine a fractured hip, make an incision, or any other rapid movement. This is recommended when other anesthesia is not to be had, or when a brief period of anesthesia is desirable.-Indian Lancet. Disinfection that Disinfects.
