THE TREASURY BUILDING is in the form of a Greek temple of lonic architecture.

The main building was begun in 1841, of Virginia sandstone. Later, the granite
porticoes at both ends were added, being finished in 1869. The whole building is
466 x 264 feet, and has cost about $10,000,000. Here there is usually stored from
$700,000,000 to $800,000,000 in gold, silver and currency.
