THE

EDUCATIONAL RECORD.

BRITISH AND FOREIGN SCHOOL SOCIETY.

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.

METROPOLITAN DISTRICT.-Mr. Saunders has continued his visitation of the Metropolitan schools, and has attended numerous public meetings, examinations, and conferences with committees, both in London and in the suburbs. He has also made visits and prepared reports, in several special cases, in connexion with country schools.

WESTERN DISTRICT.-In the Western district, fifty-six towns and villages have been visited by Mr. Baxter, who has inspected eighty-four schools, addressed fourteen public meetings, and conducted or assisted at twelve public examinations of schools.

TEIGNMOUTH.-The second public examination of this new school passed off with, much success, and was attended by a very crowded and interested audience. The attendance at the ordinary operations of the school has increased of late, and altogether there are evidences of improvement.

TORQUAY.-The examination here was the first after the settlement of the present teachers. After much discouragement and frequent failures, these schools are now showing signs of life, which promise to be real and permanent. The children did remarkably well at their work. After the interrogation through which they were put by Mr. Baxter, a request was made by a visitor from Birmingham—the Rev. Thomas H. Morgan, of Shireland Hall-to be allowed to question the boys, which the chairman at once granted. The questions were well put by this gentleman, and as well replied to by the scholars. The attendance was very numerous, and the result upon the school will doubtless be highly satisfactory.

BRIXHAM. The examination this year was again held in the Assembly Room. The attendance of the public was, in consequence, numerous, and their satisfaction with the children's work very great. The master has worked heartily and well, and he has the satisfaction of seeing the managers pleased, and the school constantly improving, as the result.

HAVERFORDWEST.-This school, which had become extinct, was revived, scarcely a year ago, and a recent public examination proved to the satisfaction of the promoters that they had not thrown away their efforts in raising it again to life and action. The boys did remarkably well, and their success will, it is hoped, encourage the
