laid aside waiting your orders. An immediate answer will oblige,

Yours respectfully,

CHARLES MARTIN.

TO MR. ALBERT MAKEGOOD, New York.

Reply to the Foregoing.

NEW YORK, July 17th, 18-.

DEAR SIR,-I duly received yours of 14th instant, and am extremely sorry the goods sent you were inferior. By a mistake on the part of my warehouseman, the parcels sent you were selected from a lot of goods intended to be sold at a considerable sacrifice in price, and which I know well would not suit your sales. In order to make amends I have re-executed your orders for both parcels, and I have every confidence you will find the goods now sent of first quality, and as cheap as any in the market. They are dispatched this day per Merchants' Dispatch Line, freight paid, and I shall feel obliged by your returning the inferior goods at your convenience, debiting my account with any charges for porterage, etc.

Trusting you will overlook this mistake, which I exceedingly regret, and that I shall be favored with a continuance of your correspondence,

I remain yours truly,

TO MR. CHARLES MARTIN, Kalamazoo, Mich.

ALBERT MAKEGOOD.

To a Firm complaining of Dǝlay in executing an Order.
PITTSBURGH, Oct 18th, 18-.

GENT,―Three weeks ago I forwarded to you an order, stating that I was in immediate want of the articles therein named, but as yet I am without any advice regarding them. As this delay has seriously inconvenienced my bus

iness, causing me to lose sales, and disappoint good customers, I shall thank you to inform me per return of mail when I may expect the goods. If they are not here by the

22d inst., I shall be compelled to purchase elsewhere, and

you will please countermand my order.

Very respectfully yours,

TO MESSRS. ROSS & BANCKER, Broad St., New York.

JOHN FEEKS.

To a Publisher's Firm, proposing to open an Account.

NEW ORLEANS, May 3d, 18-.

GENTLEMEN,-As our business is rapidly on the increase, we are desirous of opening an account with your house, and shall feel obliged by your transmitting us a trade list of your publications, as well as some of your general catalogues. Our usual terms of settlement are as follows (here state them). Should they be agreeable to your house, the favor of an early attention to our request will oblige,

[blocks in formation]

GENTLEMEN,-Having succeeded to the business formerly carried on by Messrs. Jay, we are desirous of entering into a negotiation with your house for the supply of hardware. We may mention that business is happily very brisk at present, and that, having materially increased our connection in San Francisco, Portland, etc., we flatter ourselves that we could be very instrumental to increasing the sale of this dessription of goods. We are encouraged to make this appli

cation from knowing that you were formerly in the practice of transacting business with Messrs. Jay in this way. We have, in the meantime, forwarded through Messrs. Fox a pretty extensive order for your line, by which you will perceive the nature of the articles most in demand. We would suggest, in the event of your acceding to our application, that a supply of these goods be sent to us, say every six weeks or two months, to the extent of about $700. We mention this sum at present, but hope, when the trial has been made, and we find ourselves in a position regularly to supply our country agents, to have it extended to twice or three times that amount. Mr. Mason, who returns to New York in the course of a month or two, will give you every satisfaction as to our name and position, but in the meantime we beg to refer you to Messrs. Wm. Aymar & Co., and Messrs. Harris & sons, both of which houses are well acquainted with the state of our affairs.

We trust the order we have now sent will be executed with all speed, and on presentation of the invoice to Messrs. Fox, they will give you a check for the amount, as well as advice by what vessel to ship the goods.

We are, gentlemen,
Yours obediently,

HARDING & WATTS,

TO MESSRS. MASON WATTS, Dey St., New York.

Preparatory to ordering Goods.

PHILADELPHIA, June 20, 18—.

GENTLEMEN,-Our mutual friend, Mr. Ray, having favored me with your address, and having assured me that you would gladly undertake the execution of any orders I might transmit, I annex a list of articles, for which pray favor me with your present prices. I also wish to know which of the several descriptions of goods you have in stock, as well as the length of time necessary to complete the exccu

tion of a small order for such as you may have to procure. I understand from Mr. Crane that your usual terms of business are a three months' note, or an allowance of two and a half per cent. discount for cash. Awaiting your reply, I am, gentlemen,

Answer to the Foregoing.

NEW YORK, June 3d, 18-.

Ordering Goods.

PHILADELPHIA, June 4th, 18-.

GENTLEMEN,-I am in receipt of your favor of yesterday's

date, returning my list with your prices attached, and com. municating your customary terms of business. I have selected such articles as fall within my limits, and now beg to inclose a detailed specification of those to be forwarded to me at once, and another of the goods which I wish you to procure conditionally upon their delivery here within three weeks. For some of the latter I am much pressed, & í' shall therefore be glad if you will forward them to me a they come in, instead of waiting for the completion of the entire order. If there have been any recent improvements upon my specifications, I shall be glad if you will communicate with me on the subject, and suspend the issue of the order pending my reply.

I am, Gentlemen,

Yours faithfully,

WM. THORNTON.

Requesting a Business Letter of Introduction.

HARTFORD, Jan. 16th, 18—.

DEAR SIR,—Some time ago you were kind enough to express yourself desirous of serving me in the way of an introduction.

Would it be asking too great a favor if I were to solicit from you a letter to two or three of the most respectablc builders in New York, whom I should like to wait upon?

I should esteem it a very great favor if you would obligeme, as I am convinced the position you hold among them. would considerably enhance my chance of obtaining orders. Apologizing for troubling you,
