The preservation of Fraunces Tavern, northeast corner of Broad and Pearl sts.. Mhtn., as an historical landmark was assured by the purchase of the building by the Sons of the Revolution, announced May 18, 1904. It was built in 1710 by Etienne De Lancey, as a residence; 1757 occupied by firm of De Lancey Robinson & Co.; 1772, purchased by Samuel Fraunces, and established as an inn. It was headquarters of Washington after evacuation of New York, where he took farewell of his officers, Dec. 4. 1783. The Chamber of Commerce was organized in the building in 1768. It was the meeting place of the Sons of Liberty, and in 1884 the Sons of the Revolution were reorganized in the famous "long room."
