weight fo exported. Next day a verdict was given against John Harman of the fame place, for the like offence, of 38991.

10. Lord George Gordon was apprehended at Birmingham, by Mr. Macmanus, on the 7th inftant, on a warrant from judge Buller, for a contempt of court. It appears, that he has lived at Birmingham ever fince Auguft laft, converf ing with nobody but the Jews, whofe mode of drefs and manners he has affumed, and to whofe religion, it is faid, he has profeffed himself a profelyte. His lordship made fome fcruple, at first, to travel on the fabbath: yet, though he might have been bailed till the day following, he chofe to furrender to the judge, by whofe warrant he was apprehended. He fet out accordingly from Birmingham the fame evening, or early next morning, and arrived at London on the 8th in the evening, but too late to be received into the king's bench prifon, and was therefore lodged at the grand hotel, Covent-garden, and next day delivered into the cuftody of the marfhal. He appears with a beard of an extraordinary length, and the ufual raiment of the Jews.

Henrietta Radbourne, alias Gibbons, who, in July feffion was convicted of the wilful murder of Hannah Morgan, her miftrefs, and her judgment refpited for the opinion of the judges, was yesterday fet to the bar at the Old Bailey, and acquainted, that their lordships had confirmed the verdict of the jury, and thereon Mr. recorder paffed fentence on her to be executed tomorrow, and afterwards to be diffected. See p. 35.

13. Lord George Gordon was taken from the king's bench prifon by a general habeas corpus moved

for by the crown, and committed to the mafter's fide of Newgate. It fhould feem that there was fome difference of opinion refpecting the nature of the offence, whether bailable or not. The judge faid, it was the order of the crown, and must be obeyed. His lordflip was carried to Newgate in a hackney coach with a tipftaff. Lord George, whilst he refided in Birmingham, lodged in one of the dirtieft houfes in Dudley-street, where the Jews chiefly inhabit.

2c. An action was tried fome time ago in Weftminder-hall, which from the frequency of the offence complained of ought to be made known, that those who are unfortunate enough to fall into the hands of rapacious bailiffs, and who may not have the means of procuring legal advice, may fee at once whether they are impofed upon in the payment of fees.

By the 29th of Elizabeth, c. 40 is exprefly enacted, that heriffs fhall not receive for executing any execution upon the body, land, or goods of any perfon more than 12d. for every 20s. where the fum excecdeth not to 1.—and 6d. for every 20s. above 10cl.-that they fhall levy or take the body in execution for, on forfeiture of 4c1. and treble damages.

Notwithfanding the pofitive injunctions of this act, it is a constant practice with fheriff's officers to make a variety of charges for commiflion, brokers, inventories, poffeffion, &c. which in general mount up to treble the fum they are legally intitled to, and which if they fall upon the plaintiff, as they inevitably muft where there is no penalty, will entirely eat up a fmall debt; or if upon the defendant, as in all cafes where there is a pe nalty, very frequently exceed the
