CYCLING.

All the new amateur and professional records on American tracks during the season of 1903 were made in paced races. In the amateur ranks Samuel Sulkin was the particular star. In a trial against time he lowered the mile record from 1:25 3-5, formerly held by Walter Smith. to 1:13. In competition Sulkin created new marks from 1 to 10 miles, all but the latter of which he formerly held. Some of the new figures were: 1 m.. 1:24 2-5; 2 m., 2:47 2-5; 3 m., 4:18 3-5; 4 m., 5:43 1-5; 5 m., 7:07 2-5; 10 m. (formerly held by Joe Nelson), 14:08 1-5.

Among the professionals Robert Walthour, in a trial against time, lowered Joe Nelson's figures for the mile from 1:18 3-5 to 1:07. Other records against time were made by Joe Nelson as follows: 2 m., 2:20 1-5; 3 m., 3:30 1-5; 4 m., 4:41 1-5; 5 m.. 5:51. In competition Hugh McLean, Harry Caldwell and Robert Walthour set up new figures from the mile down. McLean's marks were: 1 m., 1:09 1-5; 2 m., 2:19. Caldwell got everything from 3 miles down, except from 11 m. to 15 m.. which were made by Walthour. The latter's figure for 15 m. was 17:29 1-5. Some of Caldwell's times were: 3 m., 3:32 1-5; 4 m., 4:43; 5 m., 5:53; 10 m.. 11:44: 16 m., 18:49 1-5; 17 m., 19:59 1-5; 18 m., 21:09 4-5; 20 m., 23:30; 25 m., 29:22 3-5; 30 35:15 4-5; 35 m., 41:07 3-5. The unpaced, tandem. hour and day figures remain the same as in 1902. full records of which can be found in the Eagle Almanac of 1903.
