During the month of June there were received at the Library, by purchase, 1,108 volumes and 378 pamphlets; by gift, 1,072 volumes and 2,578 pamphlets; and by exchange, 29 volumes and 83 pamphlets; making a total of 2,209 volumes and 3,039 pamphlets.

There were catalogued 4,342 volumes and 2,585 pamphlets, for which were written 13,854 cards, in addition to which 2,592 slips were written for, and 15,021 cards received from, the copying machine.

The following table shows the number of readers, and the number of volumes consulted, in both the Astor and Lenox Branches of the Library, also the number of visitors to the Print Exhibition at the Lenox, during the month:

The most popular books of the month were (in non-fiction): Wilson's "History of the American People," Spencer's "Education," Lorimer's "Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to his Son"; (adult fiction) Ward's "Lady Rose's Daughter," Green's "Filigree Ball," Hegan's "Lovey Mary"; (juvenile fiction) Alcott's "Little Women," Connor's "Glengarry School Days," Barbour's "Half-back."

The more important gifts of the month were: From S. P. Avery, 5 volumes, II pamphlets, and 41 prints; from the Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional, Chile, 3 volumes of Chilean documents; from Harry W. Clinton, a scrap book relating to the National Federation of Musical Clubs; from the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences, 2 volumes of their Transactions; from the Greek National Library, 1 volume and 3 pamphlets; from the Evanston Free Public Library, I volume of Evanston City Reports; from C. B. Holinsworth, 7 volumes of "Zion's Works"; from the Ipswich Historical Society, 8 numbers of its Publications; from the Koninklijke Natuurkundige Vereeniging in Nederlandsch-Indie, Batavia, a copy of the catalogue of its library, printed at Batavia in 1884, and of the sup plement of 1895; from the Colonial Secretary, Lagos, West Africa, a copy of the Lagos Blue Book for 1901; from the Manitoba Grand Lodge I. O. O. F., 7 volumes and 7 pamphlets of their Proceedings; from the Michigan Grand Lodge I. O. O.
