man.” A mistake in matrimony is a mistake for life. But marriage was intended to be “for better," not "for worse." “A good wife is from the Lord.” She gives her husband an object

on which to concentrate his thoughts and affections, a cheerful, happy home. In prosperity, she softens him; in

adversity, she strengthens him. Her stimulating sympathy lifts him above himself. She brings out the man in the man. She helps him to be a victor in the battle of life, and therefore a king amongst men. “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband.”

Such a wife was Queen Louisa, mother of the present king of Prussia. Never was there a more noteworthy illustration of the truth of our proverb.

Two pictures from different periods of her life will show how a virtuous woman can be a crown to her husband both in prosperity and in adversity.

In the neighbourhood of Potsdam, the palace of the king of Prussia, is a little island surrounded by the river Havel. Beneath tall oaks, the rabbits gambol in the flitting shadows. A thousand happy birds make the branches vocal ; while on the stream hundreds of curious waterfowl are diving, and swimming.
