troubled. Acts xiv. 2. the unbelieving Jews ftirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected towards the brethren. xvii. 16. Spirit was ftirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to Idolatry. Heb. xii. 3. left ye be wearied, and faint in your minds. Ja. iv.5.the Spirit that dwelleth in us lufteth to envy. Rev. xviii. 14.- the fruits that thy Soul lufteth after, are departed from thee.

VII. In other places they fignify the SUPERIOR FACULTIES, and operations of a man's mind;

As when these laft are fuperadded to the former. Deut. xxvi. 16. thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy Soul. Add xxx. 6. Matt. xxii.37. Markxii. 30, 33. Luke x. 27. Acts iv. 32.

Or oppofed to the Body or Flesh. Mic. vi. 7. The fruit of my Body for the fin of my Soul. Mat. xxvi. 41. The Spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Add Mark xiv.38.1 Cor. vi. 20. — glorify God in your body, and in your Spirit. Add vii. 34. 2 Cor. vii. I. let us cleanse ourfelves from all filthiness of the flesh and Spirit. Gal. iii. 3. having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Add. v.17. Eph. iv. 23.-be renewed in the Spirit of your mind. Ph. iii. 3. we - worship God in the Spirit

and have no confidence in the flesh. 1 Pet. ii. 11. abstain from fleshly lufts, which war against the Soul. 3 Job. 2. I wish -- thou mayeft profper and be in health, even as thy Soul profpereth.

Firft, His Thoughts. Pf.xxiv. 2. who hath not lift up his Soul to vanity. xxxii. 2. - in whose Spirit there is no guile. Acts xix. 21. — Paul purposed in Spirit to go to Jerufalem. And Intellect. Prov. ii. 10. When-- knowledge is pleasant unto thy Soul. xx. 27. The Spirit of man is the candle of the Lord. Add xxxiii.8. Mark ii. 8. When Jefus perceived in his Spirit that they fo reafoned. Cor. ii.11.-What man knoweth the things of a man, fave the Spirit of man which

Secondly, Judgment. Dan. v.12. An excellent Spirit, and knowledge, and understanding -- were found in--Daniel. Acts xv. 24. - certain which went out from us have troubled fubverting your Souls.

Or Confcience. Num. xxx. 4.—her bond wherewith fhe hath bound her Soul. So verfe 5, &c. Acts xviii. 5. Paul was preffed in Spirit. 1Pet. i. 22. ye have purified your Souls in obeying the truth.

Thirdly, His Will and Choice. 2 Chron. xxxvi. 22. the Lord ftirred up the Spirit of Cyrus. So Ezra i.1. Pf.xxvii. 12. Deliver me not over to the will of mine enemies. cv. 22. To bind his princes' at his pleasure. Jer. xxxiv. at their pleafure'.

Fourthly, His Courage, and Refolution to pursue it. Jof. v.1.- their heart melted, neither was there Spirit in them any more. Prov. xviii. 14. The Spirit of a man will fuftain his infirmity. Hag. i. 14. the Lord stirred up the Spirit of Zerubbabel — Joshua - and the Spirit of all the

remnant of the people, and they came and did work in the houfe of the Lord. Acts xviii. 25.being fervent in the Spirit, he fpake and taught diligently. Rom. i. 9. God is my witnefs whom I ferve with my Spirit. xii.11. not flothful in bufinefs, fervent in Spirit.

Fifthly, His care and concern. 1 Cor. v.3.- I verily as abfent in Body, but prefent in Spirit. Add 4. Col. ii. 5. Though I be abfent in the Flesh, yet am I with you in the Spirit, joying and beholding your order.

Sixthly, His general Temper. Prov.xvi. 2. All the ways of a Man are clean in his own Eyes, but the Lord weigheth the Spirits. xvii. 27. A Man of understanding is of an excellent Spirit. Inclination. Eph.vi. 6.-Doing the will of God from the Heart. Col. iii. 23.-Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord.

If it be b your mind that I should bury my dead. Ex.xxxv.21. they came every one of whom his Spirit made willing. Ezek. xiii.3. wo unto the foolish Prophets that follow their own Spirit. 1 Cor. ii. 12. we have received, not the Spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God.

And thus we have a broken. Pf. li.17. The Sacrifices of God are a broken Spirit. Contrite; If. lxvi.2. to this Man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite Spirit. Humble; Prov. xvi.9. Better is it to be of an humble Spirit. If. lvii. 15. I dwell with him -that is of a contrite and humble Spirit. Faithful; Prov. ii. 13.- - he that is of a faithful Spirit concealeth

the matter. Patient; Ecclef.vii. 8.- the patient in Spirit is better than the proud in Spirit. Quiet; 1Pet. iii. 4.the ornament of a meek and quiet Spirit. A new; Ezek. xxiii.31.-make you a new heart, and a new fpirit. And a right spirit; Pf.li. 10. renew a right fpirit within me. Or a haughty; Prov. xvi. 18. Pride goeth before deftruction and an haughty spirit before a fall. Perverfe; If. xix. 14. The Lord hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof. Hardened Spirit; Deut. ii.30.— the Lord thy God hardened his Spirit. Dan.v. 20. His mind hardened in Pride.
