Καὶ ἀρχαίου κόσμου οὐκ ἐφείσατο, ἀλλ ̓ ὄγδοον Νῶς δικαιοσύνης κήρυκα ἐφύλαξε, κατακλυσμὸν κόσμῳ ἀσεβῶν ἐπάξας·

a And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath, Deut. xxix. 23. And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees' excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, Isa. xiii. 19. As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein, Jer. 1. 40. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good, Ezek. xvi. 49, 50. I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a frebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD, Amos iv. 11. But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all,

Luke xvii. 29. Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire, Jude 7.

Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die. Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh! let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither: therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar, Gen. xix. 15—23.

VER. 8.

VER. 13.

Κομιούμενοι μισθὸν ἀδικίας, ἡδονὴν ἡγούμενοι τὴν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ τρυφὴν, σπῖλοι καὶ μᾶς μοι, ἐντρυφῶντες ἐν ταῖς ἀπάταις αὑτῶν, συνευωχούμενοι ὑμῖν,

a And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. bSpots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

What! have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? VER. 16.

Ελεγξιν δὲ ἔσχεν ἰδίας παρανομίας· ὑποζύγιον ἄφωνον, ἐν ἀνθρώπου φωνῇ φθεγ ξάμενον, ἐκώλυσε τὴν τοῦ προφήτου παρ ραφρονίαν.

But was rebuked for his iniquity: the dumb ass speaking with man's voice forbad the madness of the prophet.

VER. 17.

Οὗτοί εἰσι πηγαὶ ἄνυδροι, νεφέλαι ὑπὸ λαίλαπος ἐλαυνόμεναι, οἷς ὁ ζόφος του σκότους εἰς αἰῶνα τετήρηται.

a These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved

VER. 18.

Υπέρογκα γὰρ ματαιότητος φθεγγόμενοι δελεάζουσιν ἐν ἐπιθυμίαις σαρκὸς, ἀσελ γείαις, τοὺς ὄντως ἀποφυγόντας τοὺς ἐν πλάνῃ ἀναστρεφομένους·

a For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were* clean escaped from them who live in error.

aTo execute judgment upon all; and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage, Jude 15, 16.

VER. 19.

Ελευθερίαν αὐτοῖς ἐπαγγελλόμενοι, αὐτοὶ δοῦλοι ὑπάρχοντες τῆς φθορᾶς· ᾧ γάρ τις ἥττηται, τούτῳ καὶ δεδούλωται.

a While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

Εἰ γὰρ ἀποφυγόντες τὰ μιάσματα του κόσμου ἐν ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ σωτῆς ρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, τούτοις δὲ πάλιν ἐμ πλακέντες ἡττῶνται, γέγονεν αὐτοῖς τὰ ἔσχατα χείρονα τῶν πρώτων.

a For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.

This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:

Μνησθῆναι τῶν προειρημένων ῥημάτων ὑπὸ τῶν ἁγίων προφητῶν, καὶ τῆς τῶν ἀποστόλων ἡμῶν ἐντολῆς, τοῦ Κυρίου καὶ σωτῆρος·

a That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour :
