Matt. xiv, 17-29. Mark vi, 39–50. Luke ix, 14-17. John vi, 10—20.

3about five thousand men. 'And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and he said to his disciples, Make them 'the men sit down by fifties in a company. Now there was much grass in the place. And he commanded them to make 5 all sit down by companies upon the green grass. And they did so, and made them all sit down. And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties, 'so the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took 'the five loaves, and the two fishes, and when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and 3he blessed them, and when he had given thanks, he brake the loaves, and gave 10 them to his disciples, to set before the multitude, 'he distributed to the disciples and the disciples to them, 'to the multitude 'that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would, and the two fishes divided he among them all. And they did all eat, and were all filled: and 'when 15 they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. And they that 20 had eaten were about five thousand inen, beside women and children.

"Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world. When Jesus therefore perceived that they would come and take him by force, to make him a king, 'straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get 25 into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, 2unto Bethsaida, 1while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, the departed again into a mountain himself alone, 'apart to pray and when the evening was come, he was there alone, and when even was now come, his disciples went down unto the sea, and entered 30 into a ship, and went over the sea toward Capernaum. And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them. And the sea arose by reason of a great wind that blew. And it was now dark, and Jesus was not come to them. 'But the ship 35 was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves. And about the fourth watch of the night 'Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea, 2and would have passed by them. So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the ship: and they were afraid. But when the dis- 40 ciples saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out for they all saw him, and were troubled, 'saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway, 'immediately, 1Jesus spake unto them, he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. 'And Peter answered him and 45 said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walk

1ed on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, Ŏ thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And he went up unto them into the ship, then they willingly received him 5 into the ship, 1and when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. And they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. And immediately 10 the ship was at the land whither they went.

And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him. And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, 15 2and ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was, 1and brought unto him all that were diseased. And withersoever he entered, into villages or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border, 'the hem 20 of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.

"The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; (howbeit 25 there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks :) when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, 30 Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath 35 God the Father sealed.

Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and 40 believe thee? what dost thou work? our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread

from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from 45 heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread

'of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 5 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life and I will raise him up at the last day.

"The Jews then murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven. And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven? Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to 15 me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. Not that any man hath seen the Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. Verily, 20 verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: 25 and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by 35 the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This 40 is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you ? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But 45 there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him.

Matt. xv, 1-10. Mark vii, 1-14. John vi, 65–71; vii, 1.

*And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away ? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou 5 hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

*After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

1Then came to Jesus 'the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem. And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found 15 fault, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread, for the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders. And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there 20 be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables. Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands? But he answered and said unto them, "Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, 25 This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well 30 ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition, why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For Moses said, 'for God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso 'curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his 35 mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me, 'and honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. 2And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye. 1Thus 40 have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

'And he called the multitude, and when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, 'hear,

'and understand: "There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those 2are they that defile the man, 1not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man ; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. 2If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

"And when he was entered into the house from the people, 'then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if 10 the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Then answered Peter and said unto him, Declare unto us this parable, and 'his disciples asked him concerning the parable. And 'Jesus said unto them, 'Are ye also yet, so 'without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, 2do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, 15 'entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? it cannot defile him; because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? And he said, 'But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they that which cometh out of the man, that defileth the 20 man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, 'false witness, 'blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 1these are the things which defile a man, all these evil things come from within, and defile the man: 'but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not 25

a man.

2And from thence he arose, 'then Jesus went thence, and departed, 2and went into the borders, 'into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid. For, 'behold, a 'certain 1woman of Canaan, whose young 30 daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and 'came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. But he answered and 35 said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then came she and fell at his feet, 'and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me: the woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. But Jesus answered and said unto her, Let the children first be filled: 40 for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs. And she answered and said unto him, Yes, 'truth, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs 'which fall from their masters' table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith. And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way, be it unto thee even as thou wilt; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. 'And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. And when
