Matt, xv, 29-39; xvi, 1. Mark vii, 30-37; viii, 1—11.

she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

2And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, 1Jesus departed from thence, and came nigh unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis; 1and went up into a mountain, 5 and sat down there. And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them: insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified 10 the God of Israel.

And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he 15 sighed, and saith unto him, EPHPHATHA, that is, Be opened. And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it; and were beyond measure astonished, saying, 20 He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

'Then 'in those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, 'because they continue with me, they 25 have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat: and if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far, 1and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way. And his disciples 'say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a mul- 30 titude? from whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness? And Jesus asked, 'saith unto them, How many loaves have ye ? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes. And he commanded the people, 'the multitude to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, 35 and gave to his disciples to set before them, 'and the disciples to the multitude; and they did set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them. And so they did 1all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets full. And they that had 40 eaten were about four thousand 'men, beside women and children. And he sent them, 'the multitude 'away.

2And straightway he entered into, 1and took ship with his disciples, and came 1into the coasts of Magdala, into the parts of Dalmanutha. And the Pharisees came forth, and the Pharisees also with the Sad- 45 ducees came, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, 'desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven,

'tempting him. And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation. And 'he answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky 5 is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? a wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and 'verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation, 'but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the 10 other side.

1And when his disciples were come to the other side, now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. 1Then Jesus said unto them, and he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, 'and of the 15 Sadducees, and of the leaven of Herod. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have 'taken no bread. Which when Jesus perceived, and when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, 1O little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart 20 yet hardened? having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, 'when I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, when 25 the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand 'that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? Then understood they how that he bade them not beware 30 of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

2And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought. And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking. After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

2And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Cæsarea Philippi. And it came to pass, when Jesus came into the coasts of Cæsarea Philippi, by the way, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I 'the Son of man am? 3whom say the people that I 45 am? And they answered, 1and they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist but some say, Elias; 'and others, Jeremias, or one of

1the prophets, and others say that one of the old prophets is risen again. 2And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 1And Simon Peter answered and said unto him, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto 5 thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on 10 earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then he straitly charged them, and commanded them, his disciples, to tell no man that thing of him, 'that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.

1From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, and he began to teach them, 'how that he must go unto Jerusalem, saying, The 15 Son of man must suffer many things, of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again, 1be raised again the third day. And he spake that saying openly. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this 20 shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying 'unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, 25 'then said Jesus unto his disciples, and he said to them all, If any man 2whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross 'daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, 'shall find it, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, 3what 30 is a man advantaged, 'if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul, and lose himself, or be cast away? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? For whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words 'in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, 'when he shall come in his own 35 glory, and in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

'For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. 2And he said unto them, 'But I tell you of a truth, 1verily I say unto you, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, they see, 'till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power, 1till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.

'And after six days, 'it came to pass, about an eight days after these sayings, Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John 'his brother, and leadeth them, 1and bringeth them up, and went up into 2an 45 high mountain apart by themselves to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and he was transfigured before

2them 1and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow; his raiment was white and glistering, 'white as the light, so as no fuller on earth can white them. behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias: and they were talking with Jesus, and, behold, there talked with him two men, 5 which were Moses and Elias; who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, 'Peter answered 10 and said to Jesus, 'Lord, 'Master, it is good for us to be here: 1if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said, for he wist not what to say; for they were sore afraid. While he 1yet 'thus spake, 1behold, there came a 'bright cloud, and overshadowed them: and they 15 feared as they entered into the cloud: 1and behold there came a voice out of the cloud, 'which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid. And when the voice was past, 20 2suddenly, 1when they had lifted up their eyes, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves, Jesus was found alone. And as they came down from the mountain, 'Jesus 'charged them that they should tell no man 'the vision, 2what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. 25 And they kept it, that saying 'close with themselves, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen, 'questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

1And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? And Jesus answered and told them, Elias 30 verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. 1Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come 1already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. 35 1Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them. Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.

And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him, and when they were come to the multitude, and when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude 40 about them, and the scribes questioning with them. And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. And he asked the scribes, What question ye with them? And behold, one of the multitude, a man of the company 'came to him, answered and cried out, 'kneeling down to him, and 45 saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit, I beseech thee, look upon my

'son: for he is mine only child, 'for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water, and lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him, and it teareth him that he foameth again, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away, and bruising him hardly 5 departeth from him. And I brought him to thy disciples, and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out, I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not 'cure him. Then Jesus answered him, and saith, O 'faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? Bring thy son hither 10 'to me. 2And they brought him unto him, and as he was yet a coming, when he saw him, straightway the spirit, 'the devil threw him down, and tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and 15 into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us. Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief. When Jesus saw that the people came run- 20 ning together, 'Jesus rebuked the devil, the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him. And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, 'and he departed, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, and 25 lifted him up; and he arose and Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father: 1and the child was cured from that very hour. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God.

2And when he was come into the house, 'then came the disciples to 30 Jesus apart, and asked him privately, 'Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove: and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth 35 not out but by prayer and fasting, this kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, 'and while they abode in Galilee, 40 Jesus said unto his disciples, 'he taught his disciples, and said unto them, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for 'the Son of man shall be betrayed, shall be delivered into the hands of men, the Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day, 'the third day he shall be 45 raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not,
