THE RAMBLER

N the new long novel upon which she is

IN

at work, Mrs. Wharton, the author of "The Touchstone" and "The Greater Inclination," has found a new field far removed from that which she has been cultivating-court and country life in Northern Italy in the eighteenth century. Her novel, to which she has given the striking title, "The Valley of Decision," portrays manners and customs, characters and events, and the general spectacular pageantry of the place and period.

What promises to be a valuable contribution to the political literature of the period just preceding the Civil War, as well as a most interesting relic of the great emancipator of the slaves, is a forthcoming volume from the press of McClure, Phillips & Company, entitled " Abraham Lincoln His Book." It is the only book that Lincoln ever had a hand in making, and it will be published in facsimile.

Douglas. The issue was slavery-not emancipation, but rather limitation, Lincoln contending merely that slavery should not be extended beyond the States then occupied, and not, as his opponents often stated in the campaign, advocating "negro equality," emancipation and citizenship. It was because his position was constantly misstated by his opponents that Lincoln collected all the newspaper clippings, giving, as he states, "the substance of all I have ever said about' negro equality."" These clippings Lincoln pasted in a little book, adding notes in manuscript to explain the time and occasion of each speech, and also addressing a long letter to his friend and closest supporter, Captain James H. Brown, to whom the book was given. Lincoln prepared the book as a defense of his principles, because such a defence was needed.

Captain Brown treasured up the Lincoln book, carried it and used it in the campaign of 1860, and on his death, eight years later, the work passed to his sons, William and Benjamin Brown, of Grove Park, Illinois, by whom it is still owned. It is a fortunate arrangement which permits of its reproduction. It is a "human document" of no little interest. Copyright, 1900, by CHARLES SCRIBNER'S SONS. All rights reserved

The story of how Lincoln came to prepare this unique little volume involves a recital of his views on slavery, and a statement of the political conditions then operating in the middle-west. Lincoln was, at the time, candidate for United States Senator, and his opponent was Stephen A.
