Matt. xxi, 42-46; xxii, 1-17. Mark xii, 12-14. Luke xx, 19—21.

'corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder. And when the chief priests and 5 Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

And the chief priests and the scribes the same hour sought to lay hands on him, but they feared the people, 'they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet: for they perceived, they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and 10 went their way.

1And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent 15 forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew 20 them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. Go ye therefore into the highways, 25 and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

'And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man 30 which had not on a wedding garment: and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called, but few are 35 chosen.

'Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they watched him, and they send unto him 'their disciples, certain of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, spies, which should feign themselves just men, to catch him in his words, that they 40 might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

And when they were come, they say unto him, and they asked him, saying, 'Master, we know that thou art true, 'that thou sayest and teachest rightly, 'and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thon 45 for any man for thou regardest not the person of men, 3neither acceptest thou the person of any. Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou?

Matt. xxii, 17-35. Mark xii, 15-28. Luke xx, 23-38.

'Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cæsar, or not? shall we give, or shall we not give? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, he perceived their craftiness, and knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me, 'ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money, bring me a penny, that I may see it. And they brought unto him a penny. And 5 he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Cæsar's. And Jesus answering said unto them, 'Render therefore unto Cæsar the things which are Cæsar's; and unto God the things that are God's. When they had heard these words, they marvelled at him.

And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace, 'and left him, and went their way.

"Then 'the same day 'came to him certain of the Sadducees, which deny that there is any resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, 15 Moses wrote unto us, 'Moses said, If a man die, having no children, 2and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take, 'shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

'Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, and died without children, 'having no issue, left his wife 20 unto his brother. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed and the third likewise took her; and in like manner the seven also had her, and left no seed: 'and they left no children, and died. And last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be 'of the seven? 2for 25 'all 'the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage but they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that 30 world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage. For in the resurrection, when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels 1of God 'which are in heaven.

Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; 35 and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection. 'But as touching the resurrection of the dead, that they rise. Now that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the bush, when he called the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God 40 spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living: 3for all live unto him: 'ye therefore do greatly err. 'And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.

'But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to 45 silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, which was a lawyer, one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning

together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him 1a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great, the first commandment of all 'in the law? 2And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and 5 with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, namely, this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these, 'on these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

2And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth for there is one God; and there is none other but he and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus 15 saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said. And after that they durst not, no man after that durst ask him any question at all.

'While the Pharisees were gathered together, while he taught in the 20 temple, 'Jesus asked them, saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. He saith unto them, 'How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? 'how then doth David in spirit call him Lord? For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, in the book of Psalms, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit 25 thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord. 1If David then call him Lord, 3how is he then his son? and whence is he then his son? And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

2And the common people heard him gladly.

Then in the audience of all the people, 'spake Jesus to the multitude, and unto his disciples, and he said unto them in his doctrine, saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: all therefore whatso

ever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after 35 their works for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: Beware of the scribes, 'they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, 40 which desire to walk in long robes, and love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the market-places, and the highest, the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost, the chief rooms at feasts, 1and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi; 'which devour widows' houses, and for a shew, and for a pretence 3make long prayers: the same shall 45 receive greater damnation.

'But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ;

Matt. xxiii, 8-34.

'and all ye are brethren. And call no man your Father upon the earth : for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

'But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

5

1Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall 10 receive the greater damnation.

1Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

1

1Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear 15 by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools and blind: for whether is 20 greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

1Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.

'Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like 35 unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

iWoe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build 40 the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. Ye 45 serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and

'scribes and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. Verily 5 I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

10 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For 10 say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

2And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and he looked up, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury: and many that were rich cast 15 in much. And there came, and he saw also a certain poor widow, casting in thither two mites, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, 3Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all these have of their 20 abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury, 2she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living, 3all the living that she had.

1And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple. And as he went out of the temple, his disciples came to him for to shew him the build- 25 ings of the temple. And 'one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here! And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, 1Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things, these great buildings? As for these things which ye behold, 'verily I say unto you, the days 30 will come, in the which, there shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

3

1And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, over against the temple, 1the disciples came to him privately, and 'Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 'saying, 'Master, tell us, when shall 35 these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled, when these things shall come to pass? 1and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

1And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, 1 am Christ; 40 and shall deceive many; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

1And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: 2and when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, 'see that ye be not troubled, 'be ye not troubled, 'be not terrified: 45 for 1all these things must first come to pass, for such things must needs be; 'but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and king
