Send thee help from the fanctuary: and ftrengthen thee out of Sion.
3 Remember all thy offerings: and accept thy burnt-facrifice. 4 Grant thee thy hearts defire: and fulfil all thy mind.
5 We will rejoice in thy falvation, and triumph in the Name of the Lord our God: the Lord perform all thy petitions.
6 Now know I, that the Lord helpeth his Anointed, and will hear him from his holy heaven: even with the wholesome strength of his right hand.
7 Some put their truft in chariots, and fome in horses: but we will remember the Name of the Lord our God.
8 They are brought down, and fallen: but we are rifen, and tand upright.
9 Save, Lord, and hear us, O King of heaven: when we call upon thee.
§ Pfalm 21. Domine, in virtute tua.
HE king fhall rejoice in thy ftrength, O Lord: exceeding
Τ glad fhall he be of thy falvation.
2 Thou hast given him his hearts defire: and haft not denied him the request of his lips.
3 For thou fhalt prevent him with the bleffings of goodness: and fhalt fet a crown of pure gold upon his head.
4 He afked life of thee, and thou gaveft him a long life: even for ever and ever.
5 His honour is great in thy falvation: glory and great worship fhalt thou lay upon him.
6 For thou fhalt give him everlasting felicity: and make him glad with the joy of thy countenance.
The People here in this Pfalm implore the divine bleffing upon their King, when going to War, as fome, fuppofe against the Amorites: and exprefs their firm confidence that God will grant their requests; and therefore close their Prayer with Thanksgiving, as if Victory were already obtained.
The Name of the God of Jacob defend thee. The Name of God is here put for God himself; and is a pa
rallel expreflion to the fentence in the former part of the Verfe, the Lord bear thee, &c. From this Pfalm we are taught in general that we ought to ask God's Bleffing upon all our undertakings, if we hope for fuccefs: and that it is the duty of Subjects to pray for
In this Pfalm the People join with David in prai ing God for the Victories h3 had vouchsafed him; not
7 And why? because the king putteth his truft in the Lord: and in the mercy of the moft Highest he shall not miscarry.
8 All thine enemies fhall feel thy hand: thy right hand fhall find out them that hate thee.
9 Thou shalt make them like a fiery oven in time of thy wrath: the Lord shall destroy them in his displeasure, and the fire fhall confume them.
10 Their fruit fhalt thou root out of the earth: and their feed from among the children of men.
11 ‡For they intended mischief against thee: and imagined such a device as they are not able to perform.
12 Therefore shalt thou put them to flight: and the ftrings of thy bow fhalt thou make ready against the face of them. 13 Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own ftrength: fo will we fing and praise thy power.
Y God, my God, look upon me, why haft thou forfaken me and art fo far from my health, and from the words of my complaint.
2 O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou heareft not: and in the night-feafon alfo I take no reft.
3 And thou continueft holy: O thou worship of Ifrael.
4 Our Fathers hoped in thee: they trusted in thee, and thou didft deliver them.
5 They called upon thee, and were holpen: They put their truft in thee, and were not confounded.
doubting but he will continue his protection and affift-
For they intended mischief against thee, Sc. How comfortable is the confideration that God looks upon injuries or favours done to his fervants as done to imfelf, and that he will refent them accordingly and
what a powerful motive is this to excite us to engage his friendship who thus graciou fly confiders the concerns of his People as his own! and both can, and will, effectually fupport their interests!
The royal Prophet in this Pfalm has fo plainly defcribed the fufferings of the Saviour of the World, that he feems to have been as it were an Ear, and an Eye-witness of them. And however this Pfalm may
6: But as for me, I am a worm, and no man: a very scorn of men, and the out-caft of the people.
7. All they that fee me, laugh me to fcorn: they fhoot out their lips, and shake their heads, faying,
8 He trufted in God that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, if he will have him.
9 But thou art he that took me out of my Mothers womb: thou walt my hope when I hanged yet upon my Mothers breasts.
10 I have been left unto thee ever fince I was born: thou art my God, even from my mothers womb.
II O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand: and there is none to help me.
12 Many oxen are come about me: fat bulls of Bafan close me in on every fide.
13 They gape upon me with their mouths: as it were a ramping and a roaring lion.
14 I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart also in the midst of my body is 'even like melting
15 My ftrength is dried up like a potfherd, and my tongue cleaveth to my gums: and thou shalt bring me into the duft of
16 For many dogs are come about me: and the counfel of the wicked layeth fiege against me.
17 They pierced my hands and my feet I may tell all my bones: they ftand ftaring, and looking upon me.
18 They part my garments among them: and caft lots upon my vesture.
19 But be not thou far from me, O Lord: thou art my fuc cour, hafte thee to help me.
20 Deliver my foul from the fword: my darling from the power of the dog.
be applicable in fome degree to David himself under Chrift; of whom David was an eminent Type. his Afflictions: yet it appears to agree fully to none but
21 Save me from the lions mouth: thou haft heard me alfo from among the horns of the unicorns.
22 I will declare thy Name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
23 O praise the Lord, ye that fear him: magnify him, all ye of the feed of Jacob, and fear him, all ye feed of Ifrael.
24 For he hath not defpifed, nor abhorred the low eftate of the poor: he hath not hid his face from him, but when he called unto him, he heard him.
25 My praise is of thee in the great congregation: my vows will I perform in the fight of them that fear him.
26 *The poor fhall eat, and be fatisfied: they that seek after the Lord, fhall praife him; your heart fhall live for ever.
27 All the ends of the world fhall remember themselves, and be turned unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before him.
28 For the kingdom is the Lords: and he is the Governor among the people.
29 All fuch as be fat upon earth: have eaten, and worshipped. 30 All they that go down into the duft, fhall kneel before him: and no man hath quickened his own foul.
31 My feed fhall ferve him: they fhall be counted unto the Lord for a generation.
32 They fhall come, and the heavens fhall declare his righ teoufnefs: unto a people that fhall be born, whom the Lord hath made.
§ Pfalm 23. Dominus regit me.
◄HE Lord is my shepherd: therefore can I lack nothing. 2 He fhall feed me in a green pafture: and lead me forth befide the waters of comfort.
The Poor shall eat and be satisfied, &c. i. e. Such as are truly humble and poor in Spirit fhall have the Spiritual Bleffings of the Gospel bestowed upon them; and their Soul fhall be filled with all joy in believing.
And they who are thus excited to lerve God in fircetity, fhall have endless cause to praise him; because he will bestow upon them eternal Life through lefus Christ. This is a moft beautiful paftoral Hymn: in which
4 He fhall convert my foul: and bring me forth in the paths of righteoufnefs for hip Names fake.
*Yea, though I walk through the valley of the fhadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
51 hou fhalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me: thou haft anointed my head with oil, and my cup fhall be full. 6 But thy loving kindnefs and mercy fhall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for
under the allegorical reprefentation of a Shepherd taking care of his Flock, David gratefully acknowledges the kind and watchful protection of the divine Providence.
§ Pfalm 24 Domini eft terra.
HE earth is the Lords, and all that therein is: the compafs of the world, and they that dwell therein.
2. For he hath founded it upon the feas: and prepared it upon the floods.
*Who fhall afcend into the hill of the Lord: or who shall rife up in his holy place?
4 Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart: and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, his mind unto vanity, nor fworn to deceive his neighbour.
5 He fhall receive the bleffing from the Lord: and righteousness from the God of his falvation.
Yea, though I walk through the valley, &c. As Sheep in the Eaftern Countries were frequently in most danger of Wolves when feeding in the Vallies; yet even then were fafe whilft they were under the eye and protection of their Shepherd: fo the Righteous amidst their most dangerous Trials may ftill be comforted, and look up to God with humble confidence that he will not fuffer them to be tried above that they

§ This Pfalm is thought to have been compofed for the occafion of removing the Ark of God from the "Houfe of Obed-Edom to Mount Sion: and was defigned to remind the Ifraelties of God's unfpeakable kindness towards them in choofing them for his peculiar People above all the Nations of the World; and how ftrong an obligation this laid upon them to Piety and Holi nefs.
*Who fall afcend into the Hill of the Lord, &c. Form thefe and the following words we may obferve, that tho' it may pleafe God to select fome particular
