MACDOUGALL, 68 MITCHELL STREET. 1903. 8022 LIBRARY THE LEUKÆMIA or leucocythæmia has been well known clinically since the disease was first of all accurately described by Virchow and Hughes Bennett in 1845; and although probably occurring more frequently than was formerly supposed, it cannot be called a common disease. In 1898 I published in the International Clinics a case of spleno-medullary leukæmia, and at that time could only refer to four others which I had personally observed. Since that date I have had four more, including the case to be described in this paper, making nine cases in all, of which three were of the lymphatic variety, only one of the three, that now to be described, being acute. Dock (Philadelphia Medical Journal, 31st March, 1900, quoted in Progressive Medicine, 1901, vol. ii, p. 327) recorded twenty cases seen in hospital and private practice, and expressed the view that the disease is more 1 Read at a meeting of the Glasgow Medico-Chirurgical Society held on 20th February, 1903.
