EDITOR'S PREFACE.

THE present volume is a reprint of the Ethical portion of PALEY'S MORAL and POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY, interspersed with additional Dissertations and illustrative Notes. The additional matter is distinguished from the original by being enclosed within brackets.

Paley's chapters on Politics, which are omitted here, have nearly become obsolete, while the Ethical portion of his work still maintains its ground as a text-book of Moral Science.

In the Dissertations supplied by the Editor, the fundamental positions of the science have been examined anew. Aware that different opinions have hitherto been the result of such inquiries, he has endeavoured to give sufficient reasons for the particular Ethical theory that recommended itself to his adoption. One good consequence of such attempts, is the tendency of them to keep alive discussion on a class of opinions highly interesting as subjects of thought and speculation, and exercising no small influence on the conduct of life.

September 1852.
