About the author (2011)

Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) was a German physical trainer, bodybuilder, and the creator of the Pilates method of physical fitness. He developed his unique approach to exercise and body conditioning while interned in England during World War I, where he worked to rehabilitate detainees who were suffering from illness and injury. After immigrating to the United States in the 1920s, Pilates established his first studio in New York City and spent decades refining his method and teaching his techniques to a devoted following of students.
