Being the story of the Garden State during the Civil War, as told through contemporary accounts, chiefly taken from the press. This is a good idea which isn't carried out well enough to raise the book above the level of the curate's egg. The chapters on the home front and POW life are fascinating, but for the most part the rest of the book consists of combat narratives, which are repetitive and monotonous. ( )
