Byron: Life and Legend

MacCarthy is a superb biographer, but in the book she seems to be making much ado about nothing. Benita Eisler's book had already stolen MacCarthy's thunder when she revealed the extent of Byron's bisexuality; MacCarthy tries to one-up her by saying the much-married, whoremongering Byron was basically homosexual, although she bases it on little more than wishful thinking. I much preferred Mac Carthy's biography on William Morris; she seemed more in tune with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
